Report 3: Composition and Formula of a Hydrated Salt

Aim:

 identify the unknown hydrate, selected by your teacher.

 To identify the amount of water presented
 Determine the value of x for BaCl2. xH2O (molecular formula).
 Determine the percentage of BaCl2. xH2O in a mixture of hydrate and inert sand.
Objectives of the experiment:

 To determine the percent (by mass) of water in an unknown hydrated salt.

 To determine the number of water molecules per formula unit of the unknown hydrated

salt.

Materials used:

 Barium chloride dehydrate

 Crucible and cover
 Tongs
 Wire gauze
 Electronic balance
 Tripod stand
 Burner
Procedure or steps involved:

A. Determining of water of hydration in hydrated salt

i. Find the weight of crucible 1 by the balance. The weight is 54.3487g
ii. Find the weight of crucible 1 + hydrated barium chloride. The weight is 55.3478g
iii. Find the weight of crucible 1 +anhydrous barium chloride after first heating
without water. The weight is 55.2102g
B. Calculate the composition of hydrated barium chloride
i. Find the mass of hydrate by weight of crucible 1 + hydrated barium chloride -
weight of crucible 1= the mass is 0.9991g
ii. Find the mass of water lost by weight of crucible 1 + hydrated barium chloride -
weight of crucible 1 +anhydrous barium chloride after first heating= the mass is
0.1376g
iii. Find the molar mass of water by collecting the mass of H2O= 18g/mole
iv. Find the moles of water lost by divide mass of water lost ÷ Molar mass of water=
0.00764g/mole
v. Find the mass of dry BaCl2 by weight of crucible 1 +anhydrous barium chloride
after first heating - weight of crucible 1 = 0.8615g
vi. Find the molar mass of BaCl2 by collecting the mass of BaCl2 = 208.3g/mole
vii. Find the moles of BaCl2 by divide mass of dry BaCl2 ÷ molar mass of BaCl2 =
0.004136g/mole
viii. Put the molar ratio ( with correct sig. dig) dry BaCl2 : H2O to find how many H2O
in BaCl2 = 0.004136 : 0.00764
ix. Rounded molar ratio to integer = 1: 2
x. Write the molecular formula of hydrated BaCl2 = BaCl.2 H2O
C. Determining the percent composition of mixture of hydrated salt and sand by using
the value of water of hydration in hydrated salt
i. Find the weight of crucible 2 by using the balance = 63.6187g
ii. Find the weight of crucible 2 + hydrated salt and sand before heating = 66.9220g
iii. Find the weight of crucible 2 + hydrated salt and sand after first heating =
66.8186g
D. Calculation for % composition of the hydrated salt and sand mixture
i. Find the total mass of sample by weight of crucible 2 + hydrated salt and sand
before heating - weight of crucible 2 = 3.3033g
ii. Find the mass of water lost by weight of crucible 2 + hydrated salt and sand
before heating - weight of crucible 2 + hydrated salt and sand after first heating =
0.1034g
iii. Find the moles of water lost by divide the mass of water lost ÷ Molar mass of
water H2O = 0.00574g/mole
iv. Find the moles of barium chloride hydrate in the sample by divide the moles of
water lost ÷ molar ratio of H2O = 0.00287 mole
v. Find the molar mass of hydrated barium chloride by collating the molar mass of
BaCl2 + 2x18 = 244.3g/mole
vi. Find the mass of hydrated barium chloride in sample by multiply The moles of
barium chloride hydrate in the sample x molar mass of hydrated barium chloride
= 0.7017g
vii. Find the percent of barium chloride hydrate in the sample by divide the mass of
hydrated barium chloride in the sample ÷ the total mass of sample x 100 = 21.2%
