Report Highway 4

The document describes the procedure and results of a California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test conducted on a soil sample. The CBR test involves compacting a soil sample into a cylindrical mould and measuring the penetration force of a piston penetrating the sample at a rate of 1.25 mm/minute. Raw data tables show the bulk density, dry density, moisture content, and penetration force measurements at different penetration depths for the top and bottom parts of the sample. The CBR value determined from this test will be used in the design of flexible pavement thickness to evaluate the strength of the soil subgrade.

1.0 . Test :
 California Bearing Ratio
2.0 . Objective :
 To determine the resistance of a standard piston penetrating a compacted soil specimen
at a rate of 1.25 mm/minute. The force applied during the penetration process thus the
termed as the percentage of force needed to achieve a similar penetration rate on a
standard test sample. The test is conducted to a soil sample which passes through a 20
mm standard sieve. The ratio of force taken from the test is used in the design of
pavement thickness.

3.0. Scope of test :

 The thickness of flexible pavement relies on the amount of traffic load applied in terms
of standard moving live load , the material used in each pavement layers and the soil
bearing strength which termed the California Bearing Ratio (CBR). The CBR value
changes according to the moisture level in subgrades. Therefore , CBR value must be
determine at a stage which the water content of a soil specimen is at an optimum level.

4.0 . Introduction :

As we know flexible pavement is any kind of pavement that is not constructed

using concrete. There are some functions of flexible pavement which is in it subgrade ( layer
). Subgrade is a layer of natural soil or filled soil, ready to receive the pavement material on
it. For the success full construction of the road , it is necessary that the sub-grade should not
never be over stresses. It is because the stress intensity in the sub-grade should not be of the
magnitude that may cause excessive deformation in the sub-grade. The reason all of this is
because the strength properties of the soil sub-grade should not be evaluate. In pavement
design assumes sub-grade as the strength or the basis for designing the pavement.

This CBR test is one of the test that can be used to measure strength properties
of the soil sub-grade. This test also empirical and are useful in their correlation in the design.
In other word this CBR test also useful to determine the resistance of a standard piston
penetrating a compacted soil specimen at a rate of 1.25 mm/minute. The force applied during
the penetration process thus the termed as the percentage of force needed to achieve a similar
penetration rate on a standard test sample. The test is conducted to a soil sample which
passes through a 20 mm standard sieve. The ratio of force taken from the test is used in the
design of pavement thickness.

INTERPRETATION RESULT

The CBR values are usually calculated for penetration of 2.5 mm and 5 mm. Generally the
CBR value at 2.5 mm will be greater that at 5 mm and in such a case/the former shall be taken as
CBR for design purpose. If CBR for 5 mm exceeds that for 2.5 mm, the test should be repeated.
If identical results follow, the CBR corresponding to 5 mm penetration should be taken for
design.

9.0. Discussions

1. Discuss how CBR value is determined from a series of test done using different values of
water content.

 A series of test done using different values of water content is the resistance of a
standard piston penetrating a compacted soil is has a relationship with water content. If
more water content inside the soil so that it will make the density of soil increase.

2. What is the purpose of applying surcharge load during penetration test?

 The purpose of applying surcharge load during penetration test is measured the
consistency of penetration soil by specified dimensions is allowed to penetrate into a
sample of soil under on a load.

10.0 Conclusions

The objective of this test is to determine the resistance of a standard piston

penetrating a compacted soil specimen at a rate of 1.25 mm/minute. The force applied
during the penetration process thus the termed as the percentage of force needed to
achieve a similar penetration rate on a standard test sample. The test is conducted to a soil
sample which passes through a 20 mm standard sieve. The ratio of force taken from the
test is used in the design of pavement thickness.
So , from our observations to this test we a get a result for 3 table which is table
1 is for bulk and dry density. Table 2 is for water content and the last table is for CBR
test data which is for top and bottom and under it has displacement and force. First of all
we should take a mass of CBR mould that is 2638 gm, after that the soil which are have
been compacted inside the mould also weighted : 7864 gm. The bulk density is 3.53 × 10
-3
Mg / m3 and the density for dry density is 3.37 × 106 Mg / m3. The next prosedur is for
water content. Same as before we also weight the mass of container 57 gm and the mass
of container and wet soil 122 gm, beside that mass of container and dry soil also weight
119 gm. The moisture content for it is 4.8 %.
The CBR value of specimen at 2.5 mm and 5.0 mm , we should divided
penetration force at 2.5 mm (0.0269) or 5.0 mm (0.0503) with it standard force and time
100 %. The sum for 2.5 mm is 0.203 and for 5.0 mm is 0.252.
