Xy y Yx Y: To Evaluate: The Line Integral Using Green's Theorem. Solution: The Line Integral of Vector Field F

The document evaluates a line integral using Green's Theorem. The line integral is of the vector field F(x,y) = y - cos(y), xsin(y) around a clockwise oriented circle C with center (3,-4) and radius 2. Using Green's Theorem, the line integral is equal to the double integral of the partial derivative terms over the interior region D. Evaluating this double integral gives an answer of 4π for the original line integral.

To evaluate: The line integral using Green’s Theorem.

Solution: The line integral of vector field F  x, y   y  cos y, x sin y using Green’s
Theorem is 4 .

Given data:

Vector field is F  x, y   y  cos y, x sin y and curve C is a circle  x  3   y  4   4

oriented clockwise.

Formula used:

Green’s Theorem:

Consider a positively oriented curve C which is piece-wise smooth, simple closed curve
in plane with domain D. Then the line integration of vector field
F  x, y   P  x, y  , Q  x, y  over curve C is,

 Q P 
C F  dr  D  x  y dA ...... (1)

Here,
P
is continuous first-order partial derivative of P,
y
Q
is continuous first-order partial derivative of Q, and
x
P and Q have continuous partial derivatives.

Explanation:

Write the equation of circle.

 x  a   y  b  r2
2 2

Here,
 a, b  is center, and
r is radius.

Compare the equations  x  a    y  b   r 2 and  x  3   y  4   22 .

2 2 2 2

 a, b    3, 4 
r2

The curve C is a disk with center  3, 4  and radius 2. Curve C is piecewise-smooth, and
simply closed curve with domain D and curve C is in transverse clockwise direction and
hence C possess the positive orientation. Therefore, the Green’s theorem is applicable.

Compare the two vector fields F  x, y   P  x, y  , Q  x , y  and

F  x, y   y  cos y, x sin y .

P  y  cos y
Q  x sin y

Substitute 2 for r.

 dA    2 

Substitute 4 for  dA in equation (2).

Thus, The line integral of vector field F  x, y   y  cos y, x sin y using Green’s
Theorem is 4 .
