The document provides explanations for the names of three electronic devices: 1) The thyristor combines the names of the thyratron vacuum tube and the transistor. 2) The transistor combines the words "transfer" and "resistor" since it can amplify electrical signals as they are transferred through it. 3) The diode was originally called a rectifier but was renamed in 1919 to describe its two electrodes, combining the Greek roots "di" meaning two and "ode" meaning electrode.

Explanation of the names of some devices

.The thyristor is a solid-state analogue of the thyra-

tron vacuum tube. The name ‘thyristor’ is a combina-
tion of two words – the thyratron and the transistor.

A thyratron is a type of
gas-filled tube used as a
high-power electrical
switch and controlled
rectifier. Thyratrons can
handle much greater cur-
rents than similar hard-
vacuum tubes. Electron
multiplication occurs
when the gas becomes
ionized, producing
a phenomenon known as
Townsend discharge.

.The name transistor is a combination of the words

transfer and resistor - a transfer resistor - a transis-
tor.
When it was announced the name was explained;
"because it is a resistor or semiconductor device
which can amplify electrical signals as they are
transferred through it from input to output termi-
nals."

.The "DIODE"Originally called a rectifier because

of its ability to convert alternating current (AC) to
direct current (DC), it was renamed a diode in
1919 by English physicist William Henry Eccles
who coined the term from the Greek root di,
meaning “two”, and ode, a shortened form of
“electrode.”
