Fingerprint Vehicle Starting and Security System Academic Year: 2017-18

CHAPTER-1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 History of Fingerprint Vehicle Starters

As we all know the increase in number of vehicle thefts in our country is increasing day by day.
We know that in the past A Key based system was used to start the vehicles but as the time
progressed and the developments were made in the starting systems so invention of self-starting
system has been developed.
Here we are proposing a new solution for the vehicle starting and the security mechanism. By
using fingerprint vehicle starting system we can make our vehicles more secure and reliable.

Fig: 1.1

This is a biometric fingerprint Vehicle starter which has been used in the vehicles but this system
was failure because this system was not able to store More than One fingerprint of the vehicle’s
owner.

Normally available locks in the vehicles do not provide the required security to the vehicle’s
owner. The Traditional locks which are in the vehicles are well known to the thieves and it can
be easily broken by them. Hence there is need of more protective options available for the
vehicles which must be unique and must be different from the different traditional key locks.

A reliable and important method for the humans are the fingerprint identification. As we all know
that each person has unique fingerprints so it can be easily used for different-different security
purposes. In this model we are proposing the use of fingerprint to start or stop the vehicle against
the old traditional locking method of keys.

1.2 Fingerprint Vehicle Starting and Security System

A fingerprint vehicle starter can be used for starting the vehicles. As the starters have been
developed in the past there were no external memory provided for the storage of the fingerprints
but as the time have progressed different kinds of modules have been developed for the starting
purpose and they can store some limited numbers of the fingerprints. It can provide access to
user for accessing the location also.

Following are the components which are going to be used in our system

1. Fingerprint module R305

2. Arduino UNO (Compiler)
3. Atmega 328 Microcontroller
4. GPS Module
5. GSM Module
6. Motor
7. LCD

In this all components Module R305 is latest development in the fingerprint scanner
system which can store Fingerprints up to 8 to 10 Peoples. Which can be easily used by the
vehicle’s owner and his family.

Chapter: 3
Literature Review

3.1 Literature Survey

Prashantkumar R etal [1]: In his research he has provided good and effective ways of
securing the two wheeler vehicle with a combination of different types of locking options
provided in the vehicle. This project does not use the concept of biometric identification but
provide other security options that can be used in tracing out the vehicle if theft happens and
also provide the owner of the bike the real time status of the vehicle.
In this given technique he has used both software and hardware both equally to solve the
problem of the vehicle thefts. He had used the microcontroller 328 for the storing and
monitoring purpose for the vehicles. This can store up to 10 fingerprints.

Omidiora E. O. etal [2]: In his paper basically focuses on the replacement of keys with
the biometric specially fingerprint based lock systems in the vehicles because fingerprints are
the oldest and most widely used form of biometric identification and also provide a robust
security mechanism for various security domains. He stated that the biometric locks are
overtime now because of the robust construction and durability.
He suggested that the fingerprint identification is one of the oldest type of the security system
which can be used for the ignition purpose of the vehicles.

His work is divided into thee three parts which are listed as below
1) Fingerprint analysis module that accepts the fingerprint
2) Hardware which are interfaced with the module
3) The ignition system through which starting takes place

Kiran Rana Gill [3]: His work is based on the removal of the conventional methods of
starting the vehicles like in the past Crank Shaft were used to start the engine of the vehicle
as the time progressed the system developed then starting of vehicles took through Keys as the
time passed the Push Buttons were developed for starting the vehicles. But then there are
biometric locks which were developed in the late 18th Century.

There are main four types of Biometric locks which are mostly used
1) Fingerprint system
2) Voice system
3) Face detection system
4) Palm system

He proposed the system in which fingerprint can be stored or deleted by the user as per there
requirements.

Sagar V. C. [4]: His research has been based on the development of fingerprint vehicle
starting system along with the summation of the GPS, GSM which allow user to locate the
location of his/her vehicles easily. If someone tries to steal his/her vehicle and he/she tries to
start the vehicle then a SMS will be send to the vehicle’s owner.

Some Fingerprint locking systems are available with the face detection system which are very
costly in the nature and it cannot be easily placed into two wheels because it doesn’t have
sufficient area for the installation of this system. The vehicle owner’s cell phone with the
registered Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) number acts as the master key of the security
system.

Roopam Arora and Kapil Kumar [5]: The main reason behind the development
behind this system was the replacement of the key with the biometric locks. Which can be
installed in vehicles and security level of the vehicle can be increased.

The main reason behind the development of this system was to provide an extra security and
robustness of the vehicles from the day to day threaten. For cars once the doors are locked the
start- up of engine takes place through the identification of the fingerprint of the car’s user. So
it provide an extra security to the Starting System.

3.2 Results from Literature Survey: From the surveying the different research papers
we came to know that the replacement of keys are possible from the vehicles. It is little bit
difficult to implement this system in small vehicles.

It also suggested the biometric locks are very costly but by using the proper equipment it can
be made some cheaper than the original system however its robustness can be increased. We
came to know that instead using Rasperi pie we can use the atmega 328 microcontroller which
can store and delete the fingerprint record according to the access of the user.

We conclude that the fingerprint module can provide an extra security to the vehicle’s security.

Chapter 4 Methodology for implementing the system

4.1 Block diagram

Fig: 4.1

4.1.1 Components used in the System

- Fingerprint Module
In modern day, vehicles anti-theft system is our prime duty to secure our vehicle. By
using a fingerprint module is able to start our vehicle without key. The main advantage is
by using fingerprint sensor, It is cheaper compare to other biometric system like voice
detector, face recognition, iris scanner etc. For the identification process, first it compare
the query image against with the image stored in the database and then verified

1. The user want to the start the bike, at first insert the key, the circuits are ON.
2. In the Display of LCD shows “Welcome to Security Device”.
3. And then it shows “Keep your thumb”, the user need to hold the thumb in the fingerprint
sensor.
4a. If the Finger is matched
4b. If the Finger is not matched,
If unauthorized person tried to start the bike, it shows the finger is not matched and the message
is also send to the user mobile as “Somebody trying to start the bike”

Result: This fingerprint model is used for starting vehicle engine and to increase the security
level. The fingerprint module only accept owner fingerprint and who can access own vehicle.

- Arduino Compiler
Arduino is a open-source platform used for building electronics project. Arduino consist of
both a physical programmable circuit board (often referred to as a microcontroller) and a piece
of software, or IDE (Integrated Development Environment) that runs on your computer, used
to write and upload computer code to the physical board.

The Arduino platform has became quite popular with people starting just out with electronics,
and for the good reason unlike most previous programmable circuit board, the Arduino does
not need a separate piece of the hardware (called a programmer) in order to load new code unto
the board- you can simply use usb cable additionally, the arduino IDE use a simplified version
of C++, making it easier to learn to program. Finally Arduino provides a standard form factor
that breaks out the functions of the microcontroller into a more accessible package.

Types of Arduino:
1. Arduino Uno(R3)
2. Lilypad Arduino
3. Red Board
4. Arduino Mega(R3)
5. Arduino Leonardo

- GPS Module:
GPS (Global Positioning System) is use to track the vehicle and monitor the speed of
vehicle. The Recommended Minimum Navigation Information GPRMC sentence is
decoded to get the coordinates, speed, UTC time, date month, year and other necessary
information.

The Global Positioning System (GPS), originally Navstar GPS, is a space-based radio
navigation system owned by the United States government and operated by the United
States Air Force. It is a global navigation satellite system that provides geo location and
time information to a GPS receiver anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an
unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites.

- GSM Module

The GSM module is required to establish a communication link between the owner of the
vehicle and the security system. A Short Message Service (SMS) is sent to the registered
SIM via the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) module. The owner of the
vehicle can send SMS to lock down the bike

By using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global system for mobile communication
+(GSM). This design will continuously watch a moving Vehicle and report the status of
the Vehicle on demand.

- LCD: (Liquid crystal display): It is thin flat electronic visual display that
contain liquid crystals whose optical properties change in the presence of in electric
field. LCDs must have an external light source to be visible. LCDs are commonly used
in calculators, watches, digital cameras and notebook computers.

A liquid-crystal display (LCD) is a flat-panel display or other electronically modulated

optical device that uses the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals. Liquid
crystals do not emit light directly, instead using a backlight or reflector to produce
images in colour or monochrome.

Fig: 4.6
- Push Button:

A push button or simply button is a simple switch mechanism for controlling some
aspects of the machine or a process. Buttons are typically made out of the hard material,
usually plastic or metal.

The "push-button" has been utilized in calculators, push-button telephones, kitchen

appliances, and various other mechanical and electronic devices, home and
commercial. In industrial and commercial applications, push buttons can be connected
together by a mechanical linkage so that the act of pushing one button causes the other
button to be released. In this way, a stop button can "force" a start button to be released.
This method of linkage is used in simple manual operations in which the machine or
process has no electrical circuits for control.
