Lesson Plans

This lesson plan teaches students about patterns through three parts: 1) an engaging opening activity to gain attention, 2) direct instruction where the teacher models recognizing and extending patterns using t-tables, and 3) ongoing practice where students apply what they learned to solve pattern problems independently and receive feedback.

Associative Property

Lesson Plan

1 Pre-Instruction materials

Objectives:
Define and apply the associative property of operations and numbers to solve problems.
Standards:
NJCCCS: 4.3.4.D.1; 4.5.A.5; 4.5.B.2; 4.5.D; 8.1.4.C.1
Gain Attention:
Pose this problem: “Mrs. Ehrgood asked the class to multiply 7 x 2 x 5. Ashley will use
Interactive Whiteboard
pencil and paper to multiply 7 x 2 first and then multiply the product by 5. Brian will
mentally multiply 5 x 2 first and then multiply the product by 7. Who will get the correct Math Notebook
answer?” Have students discuss in small groups.

2 Instruction materials

Teaching the Lesson:

Have students share their solutions to the pre-instruction activity. Tell the class in this
lesson they will learn what the associative property is and how to apply it. At the
Interactive Whiteboard, define the associative property- changing the grouping of numbers
in a multiplication problem will not change the product. Provide examples of problems with Interactive Whiteboard
3 factors. Demonstrate how to use parentheses to show the different grouping of factors.
Allow students to come to the Whiteboard and solve problems with 3 factors by grouping Math Notebook
them in two different ways. Pose this multiple choice question: Which expression gives the
same result as 9 x 2 x 2? (9 + 2) x 2, (9 x 2) x 2, 9 + (2 x 2), (9 x 2) x 1. Have all students solve
the problem in their notebooks. Call on a student to explain why they know it is true. Mark
the correct answer on the board and write out the explanation the student gives.

3 Ongoing Learning & Practice materials

Practice:
Tell students the next time they log into Voicethread, their assignment will be to answer http://ed.voicethread.com
and explain a problem about the associative property in their digital portfolio. After they
solve the problem, I will respond back to them the following day and give feedback on how Procedures Rubric
well they did.
Open Number Sentences
Lesson Plan

1 Pre-Instruction materials

Objectives:
Solve and explain simple open sentences using any one operation.
Standards:
NJCCCS: 4.3.4.C.2; 4.5.A.5; 4.5.B.2; 4.5.D; 8.1.4.C.1
Gain Attention:
Pose this problem, “Melissa picked some orange flowers and 12 red flowers. She picked 18 Interactive Whiteboard
flowers in all. How many red flowers did Melissa pick? ? + 12 = 18. Have students
collaborate to find the solution. Math Notebook

2 Instruction materials

Teaching the Lesson:

Have students share their solutions to the pre-instruction activity. Tell the class in this
lesson they will explore number sentences with missing information and learn how to solve
them. Demonstrate how to solve Melissa’s problem using a balance scale from Interactive Whiteboard
Illuminations. Emphasize that both sides of the equation must be equal. Teach students
http://illuminations.nctm.org/
how to find the missing number in an equation is to simply do the opposite equation. At the
whiteboard, display these problems: m + 2 = 9 ; k x 4 = 32; r / 5 = 4; y – 7 = 3. Show how to Math Notebook
calculate the opposite operation in order to balance the problem. Students will copy
examples in math notebooks. Pose this problem to solve independently in their math
notebooks: u – 9 = 4. Invite students to respond on how they solved the problem.

3 Ongoing Learning & Practice materials

Practice:
Tell students the next time they log into Voicethread, their assignment will be to answer http://ed.voicethread.com
and explain a problem about the associative property in their digital portfolio. After they
solve the problem, I will respond back to them the following day and give feedback on how Modeling Rubric
well they did.
Function Machines
Lesson Plan

1 Pre-Instruction materials

Objectives:
Explore the basic concept of a function to solve input/output tables.
Standards:
NJCCCS: 4.3.4.B.1; 4.5.A.5; 4.5.B.2; 4.5.D; 8.1.4.C.1
Gain Attention:
Call a volunteer to the front of the room. Mark on the input/output table the number 1.
Tell students that the volunteer is having a party. His mom will let him invite 2 friends. Interactive Whiteboard
The volunteer chooses two friends. Mark on the input/output table 3 in the output.
Continue adding students to the volunteer’s party until students discover the relationship
between the input/output.

2 Instruction materials

Teaching the Lesson:

Display an input/output table on the whiteboard. Have a student randomly draw a “rule”
from the rule bag. Students will copy the rule in their notebook. Have another student
randomly draw a number from the number bag and write that number in the input column Interactive Whiteboard
on the board. Ask how they can figure out the output? Explain to just follow the rule.
Randomly draw another number to add the input and calculate. Randomly draw another Brown Bags –rule & numbers
number and write it in the output. Ask how they can figure out the input? Explain to
Math Notebook
students to find the missing input, they do the opposite of what the rule is asking. Draw
another number and write it in the output. Have a volunteer explain how they figured out
the missing input. Display another input/output table that is partially filled in. Have
students complete it and check their answers with a partner.

3 Ongoing Learning & Practice materials

Practice:
Tell students the next time they log into Voicethread, their assignment will be to answer http://ed.voicethread.com
and explain a problem about the associative property in their digital portfolio. After they
solve the problem, I will respond back to them the following day and give feedback on how Functions Rubric
well they did.
Patterns
Lesson Plan

1 Pre-Instruction materials

Objectives:
Describe and extend patterns as a result of repeatedly adding, subtracting, multiplying, or
dividing by a fixed number.
Standards:
NJCCCS: 4.3.4.A.1; 4.5.A.5; 4.5.B.2; 4.5.D; 8.1.4.C.1
Gain Attention:
Call a volunteer to the front of the room. Hand the child 3 note cards. Give 5 note cards to
Interactive Whiteboard
the second volunteer. And 8 note cards to the third volunteer. Ask the class, “If this pattern
continues, how many note cards will be given to the fifth volunteer?” Have students Math Notebook
collaborate to find the solution.

2 Instruction materials

Teaching the Lesson:

Have students share their solutions to the pre-instruction activity. Tell the class today they
will practice the t-table strategy for solving numeric pattern word problems. Take the data
from the opening problem and display it into a t-table (making sure to label each column). Interactive Whiteboard
Tell the class that the t-table offers a systematic way to problem solving. Provide another
example: ““Tickets for the Taylor Swift Concert cost $3 for every couple. If 16 people go to Math Notebook
the concert, how much will they pay for tickets?” Students will independently answer in
their notebooks, making sure to draw a t-table. Review the answer together and write out a
description of how the problem was solved.

3 Ongoing Learning & Practice materials

Practice:
Tell students the next time they log into Voicethread, their assignment will be to answer http://ed.voicethread.com
and explain a problem about the number patterns in their digital portfolio. After they solve
the problem, I will respond back to them the following day and give feedback on how well Patterns Rubric
they did.
