Using Labview For Voice Signal Analysis Quick Start Guide: 1. Introduction
Quick Start Guide
1. Introduction
The VoiceSignalAnalysis.exe file demonstrates a voice signal analysis application. Use this VI to
extract the formants and pitch features from voice signals.
2. Data Source
You can import existing voice signals into this VI. This VI supports three types of voice files, including
WAV, TDMS, and AU file types.
Note Due to system memory limitations, National Instruments recommends that you do not load
signals that last longer than several seconds.
To load a signal into this VI, select File»Load Signal and select the file type of the signal you want to load.
Figure 1. Loading a Signal
For example, if you choose to load a signal from a TDMS file, the TDMS File Viewer dialog box opens.
The TDMS File Viewer dialog box displays groups and channels of data and the properties of each set of
data. Observe the group and channel names for the data you want to load. Click the Quit button to exit
and close the TDMS File Viewer dialog box.
After exiting the TDMS File Viewer dialog box, the Prompt User for Input dialog box appears. In this
dialog box, specify the Group name and Channel name of the signal to load.
3. Analysis
You can change the formant settings in the Formant Settings section to control the reading of the
formant tracks. Move the vertical yellow cursor on the formant tracks graph to observe the Linear
Prediction Coding (LPC) channel amplitude response at a specific time on the spectrum graph. The
formant tracks statistics display in the Tips section.
Figure 2. Formant Settings
You can change the pitch settings in the Pitch Settings section to control the reading of the pitch
contour. Move the vertical yellow cursor on the pitch contour graph to display the pitch contour
statistics at a specific time in the Tips section.

4. Results
You can save the statistics of the formant tracks and/or pitch contour of the voice signal you analyze.
For formant statistics, you can record up to four formants and their corresponding amplitudes at a
specific time.
Note You must install Microsoft Excel 97 or later version before saving formant and/or pitch
statistics.
To save the statistics of the formant tracks and/or the pitch contour, select Save Formant Statistics or
Save Pitch Statistics from the File pull‐down menu, respectively. The statistics save to a Microsoft Excel
spreadsheet.

These spreadsheets automatically save to the data folder of this VI.
