The key takeaways are that the UltraTEV Plus 2 can detect partial discharge using TEV, ultrasonic and cable PD modes. It has various features such as survey mode for trending results and data is stored on a removable microSD card.

The different modes of the UltraTEV Plus 2 are TEV mode, ultrasonic mode and cable PD mode. TEV mode detects internal partial discharge, ultrasonic mode detects surface discharge, and cable PD mode detects defects in cables.

Examples of defects that can be detected include internal cavities or voids in insulation detected by TEV mode, and irregularities on cable or insulation surfaces detected by ultrasonic mode.

What is Partial Discharge (PD)
Internal PD – TEV Detection
Internal PD
 PD within a cavity or void in the insulating material
 Leads to the distortion of the electrical field and hence the
discharge
 When a discharge occurs inside solid insulation, the only
emission that can escape is radio waves
 A proportion of these radio waves will strike nearby earthed
metalwork and induce a current that will flow to earth
 The passage of this current causes TEV (approx. 0.1mV to
1V), which can be detected using suitable transducers

Examples of detected defects
Ultrasonic PD
Surface Discharge
Ultrasonic Detection
 Occurs on the surface of the insulation
caused by abrupt changes in the electric
field
 Caused by:
o irregularities on the surface

o changes in surface material

o poor stress control
o contamination
o environmental conditions
Possible Ultrasonic Background
Interference
 Vibration from switchgear panels

 Normal transformer ‘hum’

 Noise from adjacent plant and machinery

 Very high EM PD activity

 Corona from HV OHLs

 Electronic interference from light fittings

 Battery chargers and DC panels

25
Function Check
• Built in feature to verify if the
instrument is in working condition
• Able to test multiple sources at one
time
TEV Mode

27
TEV Measurements
• P/Cycle – Shows the pulses per cycle based
on either a 50 or 60Hz mains frequency
• Severity – Shows the short term severity
(Calculated by multiplying TEV magnitude
(mV) by Pulses Per Cycle).
• Max dB – displays the maximum dB value
registered by the UltraTEV Plus2 for a given
reading.
• Chart - The bar chart is used to show the
amplitude of the current values being read by
the UltraTEV Plus2 , from right to left
TEV Phase Plots
• This option is useful for distinguishing
between whether a measured PD activity
is a genuine discharge or just noise
• Upper section same as ‘Measure Screen’
• Lower section contains a phase resolved
intensity plot
• Phase resolved reading of either Cable
PD or TEV activity recorded alongside its
amplitude
• Colour chart represents intensity (pulse
count)
TEV Phase Reference
• Photo as the source of the Phase reference
requires line of sight to a mains frequency light
source such as a florescent fitting
• E field uses an in-built E-field sensor as the
source of Phase reference. The sensor
detects the phase reference from the stray
electric field within the substation
• Manual allows the user to manually input a
phase reference.
• The current status of the phase reference is
indicated by the colour of the phase readout
• A red phase display indicates that a phase
lock has not been achieved
• A continuous red phase display would
necessitate the change of mode
TEV Waveform

• In TEV mode they will be measured in

dBmV
• Displays plot of TEV as a function of
time
• Used to distinguishing between genuine
PD activity and noise
• A partial discharge pulse will normally
manifest as a sharp fast rising edge
pulse whilst noise is often slower and
less repeatable
TEV Histogram

• Displays the number of events

registered for a given amplitude
• Used for determining if more than one
discharge source is present
• Multiple distinct groups of bars could
indicate multiple discharge sources at
the respective amplitude
TEV Interpretation
• The ‘Interpretation’ mode available
for TEV readings only
• The interpretation screen provides a
first pass summary of the
switchgears condition by taking into
account both the magnitude and
repetition rate of any detected
pulses
• The guide distinguishes between
noise, surface tracking and internal
discharge providing an indication of
the suggested action
Noise Detection
• Feature monitors the background
noise continuously.
• Alerts user if level is approaching a
point where the integrity of the
reading maybe adversely affected
• If the value reaches 10dB or above,
it will display a warning and will
prevent the user from using the
interpretation screen
Ultrasonic Mode

35
Ultrasonic Measurement
Screen
• Magnitude in dBuV displayed as
phase angle against amplitude
• Colour chart represents a key to
show the intensity (pulse count) at a
given amplitude and phase angle
• Confirms the presence of a partial
discharge activity
• PD - stable area which will occur at
the same position with respect to
phase angle each cycle
• Noise tends to be out of phase and
occurs at irregular positions on the
phase plot

Cable PD

40
Cable PD Measurement
• Switch on the UltraTEV Plus² device and wait until
home menu is displayed
• Install the RFCT around the earth strap of the cable
under test and connect the fitted RFCT to the UltraTEV
Plus² device
• The home menu on the UltraTEV Plus² will now display
a Cable PD icon in place of the usual TEV icon
• Press the Cable PD icon on the home menu and
proceed to press on the Measure option
• The screen will display a bar graph of the measured
PD values in picoCoulomb
• To obtain a further insight into the discharge activity on
a cable, select the ‘Phase Plot’ option on the Cable PD
screen
RFCT Connection
Requirements
• Using the RFCT for online PD tests
requires direct access to the earth bonding
strap. If present the split core RFCT can
simply be clamped around the earth cable
• With XLPE cable installations the user can
normally get access to the cable earth
strap or the core of the cables
• With PILC cables difficulty may arise
attaching the RFCT as the cable earth and
switchgear earth can be bonded together.
This is more usual on older PILC cables
using compound filled cable boxes
Cable PD Measurements
• P/Cycle – Shows the pulses per
cycle based on either a 50 or
60Hz mains frequency
• Severity – When in Cable PD
mode, this is calculated by
Charge(pC) multiplied by Pulses
Per Cycle
• Max dB – In Cable PD mode,
this value is displayed in pC
• Chart - The bar chart is used to
show the amplitude of the current
values being read by the
UltraTEV Plus2 , from right to left
Cable PD Phase Plots
• This option is useful for
distinguishing between whether a
measured PD activity is a genuine
discharge or just noise
• Upper section same as ‘Measure
Screen’
• Lower section contains a phase
resolved intensity plot
• Phase resolved reading of Cable PD
recorded alongside its amplitude
• Colour chart represents intensity
(pulse count)
Cable PD Phase Reference
• Photo as the source of the Phase reference
requires line of sight to a mains frequency
light source such as a florescent fitting
• E field uses an in-built E-field sensor as the
source of Phase reference. The sensor
detects the phase reference from the stray
electric field within the substation
• Manual allows the user to manually input a
phase reference.
• The current status of the phase reference is
indicated by the colour of the phase readout
• A red phase display indicates that a phase
lock has not been achieved
• A continuous red phase display would
necessitate the change of mode
Cable PD Waveform

• In Cable PD mode values will be

displayed in mA
• Displays plot of Cable PD activity as a
function of time
• Used to distinguishing between genuine
PD activity and noise
• A partial discharge pulse will normally
manifest as a sharp fast rising edge
pulse whilst noise is often slower and
less repeatable
Cable PD Histogram

• Displays the number of events

registered for a given amplitude
• Used for determining if more than one
discharge source is present
• Multiple distinct groups of bars could
indicate multiple discharge sources at
the respective amplitude
