FLUID MECHANICS - A

Time : Three hours Full Marks : 100

Answer any FIVE questions.

1. a) Classify fluids on the basis of Newton’s law of viscosity.

b) A flat plate of area 1.5 ✕ 104 cm2 is pulled with a speed of

0.4 m/sec relative to another plate located at a distance of
0.15 mm from it. Find the force and power reqired to
maintain this speed, if the fluid seperating them is having
viscosity as 1 poise. 10+10

2. a) Establish the hydrostatic law of pressure variation.

b) A closed tank contains 0.6m of mercury, 2m of water,

3.1m of oil of specific gravity 0.7 and there is air space
above the oil. If the gauge pressure at the bottom of the
tank is 2 kg/cm2, what is the pressure of air at the top of
the tank. 10+10

3. a) Prove that position of the centre of pressure of a lamina
