CSR Assignment
of Biocon Ltd.
Introduction:
There is a quote – “Successful people have a social responsibility to make the world a
better place and not just take from it”. As we are living in a society where no human being
can lead his/her life happy without the help of other human beings and natural resources like
land, water and air for a single day, we should feel responsible towards the society rather than
doing it forcefully for the sake of gaining attention in the society. In a similar way every firm
which uses the man power as tool for production, natural resources as raw materials and
people living in the society as its source for revenue should be taking care of the man
power (who are employees), saving the natural resources by not polluting the land, water and
air and serving the needs of the people in the society. This responsibility of the firm towards
the people and nature is termed as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). It is an
inseparable component of the product being offered by the firm to the people.
There are many positive attributes by CSR activity of the firm which helps in the growth and
its sustainability in the society. A firm which takes care of its employees and their family
makes them feel proud and responsible towards the part of work they do in the firm which is
in turn responsible for the growth and development of the firm. A firm which serves the
people in the society by providing basic essential needs like Sponsoring the poor children
education to allow them shine with some bright colours, providing fresh water for drinking
purpose by establishing water treatment plants especially in rural areas for low cost and
adopting backward areas makes the people indebted for the generosity shown by the firm.
There are few firms which emphasize on the health of people and focus on disease
prevention. Biocon Ltd. is one among the firms which addressed chronic diseases like
cancer, diabetes and hypertension and malnutrition through its products.

Under Civic infrastructure three issues were given utmost priority: Sanitation, Primary
schools and flood relief.
1) Sanitation: Biocon Foundation’s sanitation initiative was started in the year 2007 with
an aim to offer poor rural communities access to safe and sustainable sanitation
facilities. Biocon foundation is implementing a comprehensive Sanitation and hygiene

private toilet and to encourage the use of toilets by making community members
understand the link between illness and unsanitary behaviour.
2) Primary Schools: Biocon Foundation has upgraded infrastructure of existing
Government schools in Anekul Taluk and has successfully upgraded 25 schools in the
first year. In Hebbagodi, Biocon has built a primary school and toilet blocks along
with facilitating the daily supply of water through BWSSB to people living around
Biocon campus. In Hennagara Gram Panchayat, Biocon has sponsored the
construction of two primary schools.
