Technology in Sports
Technology in Sports
Shoes were the first area where technology made its impact felt in sport . Technologicl intervention has
now gone beyond to almost all aspect of sports .
Biomechanics has emerged as a specialized area with the advent of modern motion analysis tools
assisted by sophisticated software program. The playing technique of each player is analysed to
unserstand his strength and weakness . Coach device strategy to deal with individual player of the
opponent team .
Metal rackets have been replaced with composite frame having Graphite which is combined with
Ceramics , boron and Kevlar . The advantage of Graphitic racket is its great stiffness and light weight . It
will not bend when returning a ball travelling at 150 km/hr .
Football are now made of synthetic polymers particularly Polyurethane . They absorb very less moisture
and the weight of football will not change . The new FIFA rules permits up to 10 % weight gain due to
moisture . Poly urethane ball will gain negligible weight that is 0.1% of the weight.
Now there are machines which can replicate the human process :- 1. Bowling apparatus for Cricket –2.
Ball launching assembly for Basketball and Lawn Tenis Players .
Stevens Machine – It is a mechanical device to measure the amount of distortion attained by Tenis ball
on applying a known amount of force . The tenis ball is pressed between two plates and the the
readings are recorded . Different types of tenis ball with different size and rebounding capacity are used
for different size of the court .
Snikometer –It provides technical assistance to Umpires for making correct decision about catch and Leg
before wicket . It is based on the sound picked by the microphone located in the stumps or the Pitch . It
produces Ocsillation chart which is used for decision making .
Hawkeye Technology:- It is a defence invention for tracking of missile . it has been modified to recreate
the trajectory of the cricket ball . It works on a set of six wirelessly linked camera set up in different
position in the field . These images are merged using analytical software to recreate the path of ball .
GOALLINE TECHNOLOGY
Human eyes have limitation and it can make error in in judgement . Goalline is a technical means of
determining whether or not goal has occurred . FIFA further required that there should not be any
interferrnce in the natural flow of the game . Therefore the match officials will receive the signals
continuously about the location of the ball .
Human eyes can handle 16 images per second .It means the ball should be behind the goalline for 60
millisecond for the human eye to make correct decision . But in some case the ball is behind the goalline
for few microsecond before a player kicks it back or it rebounds automatically .
Another challenge for the referee is the point from which he views the ball .Viewing angle can also lead
to wrong judgements .
The Goal line technology is camera based technology . FIFA has approved HAWKEYE for the Goal line
technology .The present approved Hawkeye system works with 7 camera per goal post located at
higher location in the stadium . Even other technology can be approved if it meets the criteria set by
FIFA .
Magnetic field cables are placed beneath the goal post and all around it . Football also has a magnetic
element . The interaction between the magnetic elements of the ball and the the magnetic elemnt in
goal post or on the football ground can be used to calculate the exact location of the ball .
