Paragraph formatting lets you control the appearance of individual paragraphs within a
document. There are four ways to align text in a paragraph.
Align left, where each line of text is aligned with the left margin, leaving the right edge of
each line uneven, or ragged. Left alignment is Word’s default setting. It is often used in
informal letters and in books. This paragraph should retain left alignment.
Align center, where each line of text is aligned between the left and right margins.
Headings and titles in a document often have center alignment. Many document creators
overuse center alignment. If the paragraph has several lines of continuous text, center
alignment is not a good choice. As the eye moves to read the next line, it is more difficult
to locate the starting point. Even though it is “bad design,” apply center alignment to
this paragraph.
Align right, where each line of text is aligned with the right margin, leaving the left edge
ragged. Right-aligned text is often used for page numbering in a header or footer. It is
also used in combination with left alignment in creating printed programs. Apply right
alignment to this paragraph.
Justified, where space is added between words so that each line of text is aligned (even)
with both the right and left margins (except for a partial line at the end). Justified text has
a neat appearance and is often used in professional publications, newsletters, and format
business letters.
