Condensate System

The document describes the condensate system for a power plant. It includes two 100% motor-driven condensate extraction pumps that extract saturated water from the condenser hotwell. The pumps must be capable of operating under various conditions like starting against a closed discharge valve. Performance tests will verify the pump characteristics. Safety features are included to retain flexible couplings in the event of failure. Pump curves will be provided showing characteristics over the full operating range.

BOOK III B

PART 4.5 Mechanical Works

4.5.4. Condenser and Feed Water Heating Plant

4.5.4.2 CONDENSATE SYSTEM

4.5.4.2.1 GENERAL

A condensate system shall be provided to extract saturated water from

the condenser hotwell at the requisite rate and deliver this water to the
deaerator via the LP feedwater heaters.

It is envisaged that the condensate system will comprise of condensate

extraction pumps, a reserve feedwater storage tank if applicable, and a
gland steam condenser.

Low load re-circulation line(s) connecting to the condenser from

downstream of the gland steam condenser is typically required to facilitate
early start ups of the turbine gland system.

4.5.4.2.2 CONDENSATE EXTRACTION PUMPS

Two 100% motor driven condensate extraction pumps and motors shall
be provided. They shall be of the vertical “canned” type, mounted in a
steel pipe barrel extending below the basement floor.

The total discharge pressure characteristic of each pump shall rise

continuously from the rated capacity to the shut-off head, which shall
exceed the rated capacity head by at least 15%. The pumps shall be
capable of operating at shut off without the need for leak off to prevent
overheating. Each pump and motor drive shall be capable of starting
against a closed discharge valve and shall be capable of operating
between zero flow and run out flow without overloading the motor drive.
Performance tests shall be carried out to verify the above.

Duty rating of the pumps shall be based on the maximum

Turbo-Generator requirement plus 12% flow margin.

The method by which the flow is regulated to control the condenser

hotwell level shall be described within the Contractor proposal.

These pumps shall start automatically as required; the time taken to bring
in a standby pump shall be stated. Each pump shall be capable of
continuously operating on its own against run-out or on stand by. The
capacity and mode of operation of the low load recirculation lines shall be
described.

Part 4.5 - 70 PLTU 2 NTB (2 x 25 MW)

PART 4.5 Mechanical Works
4.5.4. Condenser and Feed Water Heating Plant

Each pump shall be provided with suction and discharge pressure gauges
together with any other local instrumentation required.

Pump materials shall be chosen to resist deterioration by cavitations,

pitting or corrosion. Estimated pump life shall be provided together with
the basis of the estimate. Likewise, the estimated life of the bearings and
any mechanical seals shall be stated and whether they may be replaced
without major dismantling of the pumps; bearing or mechanical seal life of
less than 15,000 hours operation will not be acceptable.

Each pump shall be provided with a temporary fine mesh strainer in the
suction line for preliminary operator and commissioning.

Safety features shall be included to ensure that any flexible coupling is

retained concentric with the driving and driven shafts in the event of either
flexing element or bolt failure. Locking arrangements shall be of a proven
type.

A vent pipe shall be supplied for each pump to equalize the pressure
between the pump suction and the condenser vapour space, the
Contractor shall confirm that any loss of prime is automatically rectified.

During the Contract stage, curves shall be provided showing, generated

head, motor absorbed power, free suction NPSH and axial thrust (if non
balanced design) against flow rate. These characteristic curves shall
extend over the full operating range.

Pump shall have non-overloading characteristics and shall have stable

head-capacity characteristics so that the head shall continue to increase
with a decreasing capacity until a maximum head is reached as zero
capacity.

The Contractor shall be responsible for the pump and motor combination
operating in dynamic balance without undue vibration or noise. The critical
speed of the complete unit (pump and motor) shall be at least 25 % above
or below the operating speed.
