Title of Lesson: Sun and Moon - Warm and Cool Colors (6 days)
Long Range Goals: Understanding, Identifying, and Applying the Warm and Cool Colors to their sun and
moon illustrations.
Standards: 1.4, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, 5.2, 5.3, 6.2
Objectives:
1. TSW understand that color can be used to evoke feelings, temperatures, time of day, seasons, and
etc.
2. TSW learn more of the Color –wheel and apply it when coloring their masterpieces.
3. TSW learn the Warm and Cool Colors and use them on their Sun and Moon illustrations.
4. TSW match the correct colors on the appropriate parts of their sun and moon.
5. TSW build on previous lessons of the Elements of Art in designing their sun and moon.
6. TSW learn how to properly use and clean a paint brush.

2. Teaching Strategies:
a. Tell students about the new project. How we’re starting with a pre-test, taking notes from the
board and power-point, painting their own Color-wheel, creating their own sun and moon to
represent the warm and cool colors, show and tell, and lastly, taking the test to end the lesson.
b. Pass out the Color Pre-test
c. Go over the Pre-Test
d. Students take out lined notebook paper for notes from board and power-point.
e. Students trace paper plate in the center of paper to begin their Color-wheel they’re going to
create and paint using only the Primary colors.
f. Students will label each triangle slice correctly before painting.
g. Teach how to properly use and clean a paint brush.
h. Students will learn how to mix their colors correctly starting from the three Primary colors to
create the color they are needing to complete their wheel.
i. Everyday there will be a new Daily Focus question on the board for them to date, write, and
answer in their folders. These questions are to help with recognition, higher thinking skills, and
critical thinking.
j. Chart of shapes, color wheel, and line.
k. Walking around the classroom assisting.
l. Allowing students to get out of their seats and to go check the color-wheel chart on the wall up
close.
m. After the majority has finished their color-wheels, introduce the rest of the lesson with the main
project of the Sun and Moon – Warm and Cool colors.
n. Refer back to the power-point that shows natural examples of warm and cool colors. For
Example: Lava is red, a warm color.
o. Show students where the helpful/inspirational teacher copies, that they don’t mark on, stay and
that they’re on the back table for their convenience. These copies are examples of Sun and
Moon drawings from the internet or some that I’ve made for them.
p. Students will be doing this part of the project on the large drawing paper. They will start by
tracing the plate on their paper once again. The large circle starts the layout of the sun.
q. Students will have “Tester” paper at their convenience as well. This paper is used to test out a
color to see if they like it or to sketch something out before they put it on their paper.
r. Teacher will draw on the white board for all to see and they can follow along.
s. Students work independently, teacher walks around and assist.
t. When the due date is up, teacher reviews with students, and then gives the test.
u. Teacher displays finished work in the hallways.
5. Closure:
a. Students respond by raising their hands when questions are asked.
b. Students write on the back on their work the warm and cool colors.
c. Students are asked to come and do “Show and Tell” – part of the review process.
d. Teacher reviews with class, they have their notes out in front of them.
e. Students sign and date their masterpieces.
f. Teacher hangs their artwork in the hallway.
6. Re-Teaching Procedure:
a. If the circle is too small or the moon half, teacher helps student start over on the back of the
page.
b. If the shape is not pleasing, students will flip over their notebook paper and practice drawing the
shape on it.
c. Students may go over their black lines if they want them to be darker.
d. If it’s a lost cause, student may start over with teacher assistance.
7. Alternative/Supplemental Activities:
a. If the student is completely frustrated, the teacher will give them a template for them to work
with or on.
8. Evaluation:
a. Student self - Evaluates
b. Teacher evaluates student as work progresses.
c. Teacher goes back over the requirements list for the students.
d. Students identify and write on the back of their art the warm and cool colors.
e. Test is given and graded. Artwork and test are two separate grades.
9. Clean Up:
Use established classroom procedure.
