Hydraulic Gradient of Soil Layers (BTP)

This document provides typical permeability coefficient values for different soil types based on their Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) description. Values range from 5x10-4 to 5x10-1 m/s for well graded gravels and sands with little fines to 1x10-10 to 1x10-7 m/s for inorganic clays and silts of high plasticity. The values should only be used as guidelines, as site-specific conditions may require different parameters. Empirical relations can also estimate permeability, such as Hazen's equation for sands relating it to the effective grain size.

Hydraulic Gradient of Soil Layers (BTP)

Typical values of soil permeability

Some typical values of permeability coefficient are given below for different soil types. It refers to
normally consolidated condition unless otherwise mentioned. These values should be used only as
guidline for geotechnical problems; however, specific conition of each engineering problem often
needs to be considered for an appropriate choice of geotechnical parameters.

Empirical relations for dtermine the soil permeability coefficient

For Sands, the coefficient of permeability can be estimated from the Hazen's equation:
