Inferential Meter

This document discusses different types of inferential flow meters, including single jet, propeller, and turbine flow meters. Single jet flow meters work by measuring changes in static pressure caused by the flow through a restriction. Propeller flow meters use the rotational movement of an impeller or rotor placed in the flow stream. Turbine flow meters transform the kinetic energy of flowing fluid into rotational energy using a spinner with angled blades.

INFERENTIAL FLOW METER

SINGLE JET FLOW METER PROPELLER FLOW METER

PRINCIPLE
A flow meter in which the flow is determined by
measurement of a phenomenon associated with
the flow, such as a drop in static pressure at a re-
striction in a pipe , or the rotation of an impeller
or rotor, rather than measurement of the actual
mass flow.
 Liquid enters tangentially in the working chamber
 Liquid passes smoothly around and up through
ADVANTAGES  Imparts rotary movement to the rotor the working chamber
 Liquid passes through the clearances towards the It is guided to the outlet.
 High Rotor Speed  Low Cost 

 Low Pressure Loss  Shaft rotation detected by the movement of the
 Speed of rotation is proportional to fluid velocity. blades using counter dial.

 Less Accuracy  Not suitable for low
flow rates

APPLICATION
 Used for the flow measurement and control of
gases
 Can be used for establishing total flow as well  Flow transfers momentum to the first rotor  Turbine flow meters use the mechanical energy
as flow rates which spins counter clockwise
of the fluid to rotate a pin wheel (rotor) in the
 Test performance of pumps, engines, valves and  Flow enters second rotor nearly perpendicular to flow stream.
