Task/Setting: Writing Focus. Prior to this performance task students would have learned how to write an organized speech and how
to select appropriate information. Grade 6 will be holding class elections for the year. The different positions that they can apply for
are president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, reporter, historian, and super citizens. We would have descriptions of each role
and the students would be able to pick what role they think they would be best suited for. They will be creating a speech that uses
descriptive vocabulary and uses appropriate content for describing what attributes make them good for the positions. Finally, the
students will be orally giving the class their speeches to try and convince them why they are good for the positions.

Learner Outcomes and Assessment Criteria

Instructional Support/Differentiated Instruction/Scaffolding for Student Success

There may be a variety of diverse students within the classroom. How can we support these diverse learners? Many supports
can be used in the classroom for student success. The way you structure your classroom can help support all learners at the same
time. Providing clear instructions, orally as well as posting these instructions on the board can be used as a way to keep students on
task, and a place to look if they forget what to do next. Modelling the expectations, providing examples and exemplars can be useful
supports for all students. Since the performance task has a strong writing focus, the biggest things we can accomodate for our
diverse learners will be how they can get the task completed. This may be shortening their speech, differentiating the task by using
easier to understand language. Providing students the use of technology, chromebooks/computers to write their speech. Speech to
text options if writing is an issue. The ability to look up terminology that may be hard to recognize, providing word banks with terms
they may come across in their writing. The help of peer buddies to brainstorm with, or ask for clarification. The use of Graphic
Organizers to help sort out important information. Allowing the student to have extra time, if needed. The students are also given a
variety of choices for which roles they wish to have.

Differentiated Instruction for students with disabilities:

● Scaffolding instruction through guided practice, memory prompts and supports
● Word processors to aid in the writing process of the task
● Using a performance task that uses the appropriate level of language that matches the students cognitive ability
● The written portion of the task may be shortened
● The use of technology when needed-Speech to text, word processors, if the students struggles with the written portion
● EA or teacher one-on-one support
● Share assignment in advance
● Extra time for completing the assignment

Differentiated Instruction for the ELL Student

● Allow students to work in small groups
● The use of technology-Ipad to search words that are unfamiliar to them
● Choice
● The use of Graphic organizers to help sort out information
● RAFTS( Role, Audience, Format, Topic, Strong Verb) worksheet to help guide writing
● Present to a small group/ or teacher- helps students who may not be confident with their English
● Provide a word bank with appropriate terminology
● Allow students to write in their own language if needed
● Allow students to write in their own language then translate to English if needed
● Read, write, speak tool available for them
● Share assignment in advance so they can read and work on it in advance

Differentiated Instruction for the Gifted students

● Have the student participate in their own assessment process
● Allow the student to self reflect/self assess
● Allow the student to set goals for themselves
● Provide a behind the scene individual project if they are interested- this could tie in cross-curricularly-Social Studies current
events/ trials ect.
