What is Explicit Dynamics?
• “Implicit” and “Explicit” refer to two types of time integration methods
used to perform dynamic simulations
• Explicit time integration is more accurate and efficient for simulations
involving
– Shock wave propagation
– Large deformations and strains
– Non-linear material behaviour
– Complex contact
– Fragmentation
– Non-linear buckling

• Typical applications
– Drop tests
– Impact and penetration

ANSYS Explicit Dynamics
ANSYS Explicit Dynamics is included in the ANSYS
Mechanical Enterprise level license and is not
available as a product by itself
• It utilises the Autodyn solver within the
standard ANSYS Mechanical interface to
analyse transient structural events
• It is used for simulating fracture, cutting,
failure, buckling, impact, drop as well as highly
nonlinear quasi-static simulations that the
implicit APDL-based solvers would struggle to
converge
• Users with an Autodyn level license have
access to the Explicit Dynamics interface in
Mechanical as a method to preprocess their
structural geometry

ANSYS Autodyn
ANSYS Autodyn is ANSYS’s own top level explicit
solver and is a standalone license level
• It combines finite element, finite volume and
smooth particle hydrodynamic solvers into a
single dedicated interface
• It can simulate many short time duration
nonlinear events such as:
– Blast and blast structure interaction
– Weapons effects and target response
– High speed impacts
– Severe structural deformation
– Fluid structure interaction (severe structure deformation)
– Fracture, cutting, failure, buckling, impact, drop

ANSYS LS-Dyna
ANSYS offer LSTC’s full LS-Dyna solver
• Tied into ANSYS Workbench via an ACT
extension
• Allows you to setup, solve and post-process
models in the standard ANSYS Mechanical
interface but solve using the LS-Dyna Explicit
solver
• ANSYS will support you in your use of the
structural components of the LS-Dyna solver
