INTRODUCTION

Background and Objectives:

Voting is the foundation of every democratic system, and is used not only in political
elections but in many other day-to-day areas. Voting comes with its risks of being unfair and
inaccurate. To ensure flawless and secured voting, “Electronic Voting Machine” has become an
effective tool. It avoids any kind of malpractice and invalid votes. Also, such kind of system is
more economical due to reduction in the expenditure incurred on manpower and stationery
materials. It is also convenient on the part of voter, as he has to just press the particular key for
his respective candidate.

Objectives:
 We are planning to develop a system where there will be no need to change the program
each time before voting.SETUP function is supposed to enable the authority to enter the
name of Post and candidates for each post just before election, making the voting more
secure.
 The system will even have the provision not to vote for voters who don’t like anyone of
the existing candidates.
 The system will include Biometric verification of voters so that automatically it can be
insured that one person is voting only once.

System Overview:

The “ Electronic Voting Machine ” basically consists of three main blocks that can be
interlinked; a biometric verification unit, a ballot unit which a voter uses to exercise his vote and
a control unit.

1) Biometric verification Unit:We are planning to make use of fingerprint based image
processing system for verification.
2) Ballot Unit:It consists of a LCD and a keypad.
 LCD: Liquid Crystal Display which is commonly known as LCD is an alphanumeric
display .It can display alphabets, numbers as well as special symbols thus LCD is a user
friendly display device which can be used for displaying various messages unlike seven
segment display which can display only numbers and some of the alphabets. The only
disadvantage of LCD over seven segment is that seven segment is robust display and be
visualized from a longer distance as compared to LCD .LCD displays the name of the
post and candidate for which voting is going on.
 Keypad: Keypad has one key specified for one candidate. This block is used in both
voting and counting mode, in voting mode key of respective candidate is pressed, the
1
corresponding signal is sensed by micro controller. In counting mode this keypad is used
to check the votes of respective candidate. The key given for candidate is pressed and
micro controller senses the corresponding signal.

3) Control Unit:It consists of microcontroller unit(MCU) and switches and a keypad.

 Keypad:It is used to input the name of posts and the candidates.By using this we will
not have to program the machine each time before any election. One can enter the
name of posts and candidates just before the election. This can also prevent
programming the EVM to favour any particular candidate.
 Control switches: There are various control switches depending upon the design.
 Micro controller unit: MCU stores the program, runs it and also stores the data given
by voters.Micro controller senses the signal given from switches and decides the
mode of operation. In voting mode it increments the data for corresponding key i.e.
respective candidate as well as it sends signal to display block to indicate one key is
pressed. In counting mode micro controllers fetches data from memory location and
send it to display devices.

CONCLUSION
In total, we intend to design a complete system (including all the hardware components and
software routines) working as per the initial background and requirements of our project.
Because of the creative nature of the design, if we are able to move forward without much hurdle
some features could be fine-tuned . So certain aspects of the system can be modified as
operational experience is gained with it. As the users work with the system, they develop various
new ideas for the development and enhancement of the project.
