This document contains an assignment for a fluid mechanics course. It includes 9 questions across two sections. The questions cover topics like Newton's law of viscosity, the effect of temperature and pressure on fluids, types of manometers, Pascal's law of hydrostatics, fluid flow concepts, and calculating pressure differences and vorticity using given fluid flow fields. Students are asked to explain concepts and solve applied problems involving fluid mechanics principles.

Basic Fluid Mechanics and Rate Processes
Assignment -I Date:02.04.2018 Section-I
Attempt any Five questions:
1. Explain Newton’s Law of Viscosity. Briefly describe the causes of phenomena. 2. Describe the effect variation of temperature and pressure in Newtonian liquids and gases. 3. What is manometer? What is the function of Differential manometer? Write the types of mechanical gauge. 4. State and Prove the Pascal’s law of hydrostatics. 5. Explain the following with their examples: (i)Laminar and turbulent flow (ii) Stream Line and Streakline (iii) Dynamic viscosity and kinematic viscosity (iv) Uniform and non uniform flow (v) Steady and Unsteady Flow.
6. Explain briefly Eulerian and Lagrangian fluid flow with expression.
Section-II
Attempt All questions:
7. A circular plate of diameter 2m is submerged in water vertically such that its top surface is 1 m below the free surface of the water. Determine the total pressure force on the plate and the position of the centre of pressure.
8. A differential U-tube manometer is used to measure the pressure difference
between points 1 and 2 in a pipeline conveying water. The point 1 is 0.5 m lower than point 2.The difference in level of manometric fluid on two limbs is 0.8m. Calculate the pressure difference between point 1 and 2.Assume density of mercury as 13600 kg/m3 and density of water as 1000 kg/m3.
9. The flow field of a fluid is given by V = xyi + 2yzj - (yz + z2)k .
i)Show that it represent a possible 3-dimensional steady incompressible flow. ii)Is this flow rotational? If determine angular velocity at a point (2,4,6) iii)Vorticity at point (2,4,6)
