Yield Stress

The document discusses yield stress (σy), which is the boundary between elastic and plastic deformation in materials. It is difficult to precisely determine the threshold where elastic behavior deviates from linearity, known as the proportional limit. Yield stress determines a material's resistance to plastic strain. A table compares the yield stresses of various metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. It shows that ceramics generally have the highest yield stresses, followed by metals, and then polymers, which often fracture before reaching yield.
