Why is Backup Important & Potential Risks.

Causes of Data Loss: P142 (Rees)

1. Human Error 32%
2. Software Corruption 25%
3. Virus 22%
4. Hardware Error 13%
5. Sabotage 6%
6. Natural Disasters 2%.

Variables in Backup Plan? Rees P143

Backup Plan:
 What (Importance of Data e.g notes vs past papers),
 When (Evening / Weekend TIME, Frequency),
 Storage (Where) Medium / Location – Magnetic / Optical / Flash / Remote
(Floppy: small storage, Flash can be vulnerable & CD’s may be read-only.)
 Responsibility (Who)
 How (Type).

Types of Backup: Full, Incremental, Differential. Rogers P113, Rees P144 Doyle P210

Full – Every file is backed up, every time.

Slow to backup, fast to restore, large storage. Similar to Disk images i.e. Clonezilla

Differential – Stores a full backup and a differential of changes since the last full back
up. (2 files Need Full and last diff)
Faster to back up, can be slower to restore with full and differential backups, less
storage.

Incremental –Full is done as well as several small incremental updates. e.g. periodic
full update every Saturday, and there are more frequently e.g. nightly incremental
updates. (Many files, full and each increment)
Fastest of the three to backup, and slowest to restore with many increments,
smallest storage space. E.g. Windows Update

Backup Restore Storage

Full Slowest Fastest Most
Differential > I < F > F < I > I < F
Incremental Fastest Slowest Least

Responsibility for backup and recovery

On a network a network manager, on a standalone computer it’s everyone’s
responsibility.

Where is valuable data stored?

Away from original server!
Remote location or another site (fire or flood).
Should be secure.

Need for continuity of service

Loss of business E.G. Amazon.

Back up servers. Costs.
Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP):
o Resume trading quickly
o Customer confidence
o Retain customers
