Tutorial 8

1. The document discusses two binary mixtures - chloroform and methanol, and acetone and methanol. 2. For the chloroform and methanol mixture, the document gives the Margules equation that represents the system and asks to determine parameters from given data and calculate pressure and vapor composition at equilibrium with a liquid mixture. 3. For the acetone and methanol mixture, the document gives the Wilson equation that represents the system and asks to calculate pressure and vapor composition at equilibrium with a given liquid mixture.

TUTORIAL 8

1. For a binary mixture that contains chloroform(l) and methanol(2) at 101.325 kPa, the system
forms an azeotrope at x1 = 0.645 and T = 53.5°C. The binary system is well represented with
the Margules equation as given below:

ln 1  x22  A12  2 A21  A12  x1 

ln 2  x12  A21  2 A12  A21  x2 

a) From the above data, determine the parameters A12 and A21 with respect to Margules
equation.
b) By using the values in (a), determine the total pressure and the vapor phase composition of
the system that is in equilibrium with 50% mole liquid mixture of chloroform at 70°C.

2. A binary system that contains acetone(1) and methanol(2) is well represented by Wilson
equation as given below:

 12 21 
ln  1   ln  x1  x2 12   x2   
 x1  x2 12 x2  x121 

 12 21 
ln  2   ln  x2  x121   x1   
 x1  x2 12 x2  x121 

equilibrium with 30 mole % liquid mixture of acetone at 55°C (328.15 K).
