Introduction
One of the basic spiritual principles in life is: If
you don’t grow, you decay. Spiritual maturity is
not an option, but an essential for the Christian
life. Yet, it is not attained automatically, and this
is where the difficulties arise for many Christians.

It is not easy for many today to devote themselves

to the long-term works of God in their lives. The
kind of society in which we live opposes our
maturity.

One of the essentials of spiritual growth is

sharing intimacy with God through prayer,
meditation, and Bible study. The purpose of this
devotional guide, Time With God, is to enhance
your quiet time with God, thus deepening your
relationship with Him and producing spiritual
growth.

I trust that Time With God will be a blessing to

you in your journey with Christ.

How to Use This
Devotional Guide
Time With God is a tool. No tool is of any value
if it is not used. Therefore, we hope that this tool
may be put to good use in your life.

Moreover, the effectiveness of a tool depends on

the familiarity the user has with it. Skill with any
tool comes through experience. The more you use
Time With God the more skillful you will become.

Time With God offers you a form or a pattern.

Almost everything we do that is successful follows
certain patterns. It could be that the reason
many Christians never develop a meaningful
devotional life is that they have failed discovering
a meaningful devotional pattern.

The Time With God devotional pattern consists of

four elements:
1. Prayer
2. Bible Study
3. Meditation
4. Recording

The next information will help to familiarize you

with this plan.

4
Time Allotment
The amount of time you allocate to your devotions
depends on you. It would be best to set aside a
minimum time each day (perhaps 20 to 30 minutes)
at an established time. Discipline yourself to keep
it. On some days, the Spirit of the Lord may lead
you into longer times in His presence.

I. Prayer Time
The acrostic for the word A-C-T-S will become the
basic prayer pattern for your devotional time.

Adoration

Your prayer time should begin with adoration of

God for His excellent greatness. Adoration is a
time to praise and worship God for who He is.
You will want to focus on one of the aspects of
God’s attributes, character, or nature. A list of
these is provided in the devotional guide. The
worthiness of God to receive praise, glory, and
honor is the focal point of adoration. At times,
singing is appropriate during adoration.

5
Confession

Confession must be a continual part of your

devotional life. There must be the confession of
known sins, sins of omission and unforgiveness.
Ask the Holy Spirit to perform His ministry of
conviction by bringing any sins that you may have
committed in the last twenty-four hours to your
conscious mind. It is important to deal regularly
with your personal sin and to keep short-term
accounts with God.

A continual cleansing is needed in some areas

to wash out the effects of sins committed by you
or against you. You need to submit to God basic
assumptions about yourself, your relationship,
your mind and your emotions. Pray for your
personality structure daily by appropriating God’s
grace and inner healing.

Restitution may be required for some acts of sin.

There may be someone’s forgiveness you need to
seek, or you may need to make right any wrongs
you have committed. A place is provided in your
devotional guide to write out your commitment to
restitution if it is needed.

6
Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is the offering of true gratitude to

God for His blessings. Let a spirit of gratitude
fill your heart. Begin your thanksgiving to God for
the forgiveness and cleansing of your confessed
sins, and then focus your attention on particular
blessings from God. It is also good to periodically
give thanks to God for your redemptive history. A
redemptive history is what God’s grace has been
producing in your life (i.e., what God is doing in
me, from where God has brought me, what God
is teaching me).

Supplication

Supplication is a time to express your petitions to

God. This involves both intercession and personal
requests. Intercession is your prayers to God on
behalf of the needs of others. Personal requests
are your petitions concerning needs in your life.
It is important to present to God those things you
will be facing in the next twenty-four hours.

A prayer list is provided to assist you in praying

specifically.

NOTES

II. Scripture Reading

Where prayer and praise is your talking to
God, in the Scriptures God talks to you. In your
devotional time, you will want to read a large
enough portion of scripture to grasp a principle
that may be applied to your life, yet not too large
to be absorbed. New Christians should begin
with smaller portions, perhaps no more than
one chapter a day.
8
It is helpful to select a version of the Scriptures
with which you are comfortable and which you
understand. It is also important to read the Bible
in a systematic and sequential manner. By
reading through a particular book in the Bible,
you are able to observe the context of each
verse and grasp a fuller meaning of the text. A
chart is provided for-you so that you may gauge
your progress in Scripture reading.

If you are a new Christian, the following

sequence is suggested to you: (1) Gospel of
John, (2) Acts of the Apostles, (3) 1, 2, 3 John,
(4) Psalms, (5) Romans, (6) Proverbs, and (7)
James. After this, read the other books in the
Bible as you so desire.

In order to gain the most from your Bible reading,

you may want to ask some of the following
questions about your selected passage:
Is there a promise for me to claim?
Is there a warning for me to heed?
Is there a commandment for me to obey?
Is there a principle for me to apply?
Is there a lesson for me to learn?

Space is provided in your devotional guide for

any notes you would like to record concerning
your Bible reading.
9
III. Meditation
David said that the blessed man is one who
regularly meditates on God’s law (Psalm 1:2;
119:97, 99). God commanded Joshua that the
children of Israel should meditate upon His Word
in order to be successful in life (Joshua 1:9).

Meditation is simply a quiet focusing of your

attention on one concept or thought. The Holy
Spirit may lead you to focus your thoughts quietly
on a truth from your Bible reading or something
that arose from your prayer time. It is helpful to
write down this thought in one or two sentences
so that you can keep it in mind all day. A space
is provided in your devotional guide for this.

It may be that during your moments of quiet

meditation God speaks to your own heart. Wait
on Him and listen for His still, small voice.

IV. Recording
On the back side of your devotional guide
is a section for recording. It is important to
record significant events from your devotional
experience.

10
Direction and guidance that you may have
received from God, information from your Bible
reading, a prayer or praise that you would like
to write out, an experience that you had, your
thoughts or feelings at that moment, etc., are
things you will want to record.
