Simulation Laboratory Report Lab 5 - HYSYS Simulation Water Stripper Unit

This document summarizes a HYSYS simulation of a water stripper unit. The simulation strips hydrogen sulfide and ammonia from sour water. Sour water enters the stripper at 1000°F and 40 psia and is heated in a heat exchanger before entering the stripper. Steam separates the H2S and NH3, which exit as off-gas, while stripped water exits and is recycled. The simulation is run to calculate stream compositions. Increasing feed pressure would decrease H2S composition in exit streams due to more components transforming or being removed from the gas phase.

Simulation Laboratory Report

Lab 5 - HYSYS Simulation Water Stripper Unit

CDB1064 Principles of Chemical Engineering, January 2018 Semester
Prepared by: Tan Yee Xhuen (25402) and Muhammad Faiz Hakimi bin Mohd Sukhri (25224)
Date: 6/2/2018
Introduction
Water treatment is a process in which the quality water is improved so that it is more
acceptable for daily usage, such as drinking, irrigation, industrial water supply and not
threatened the environment. Sour water contains element of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and
ammonia (NH3) that are harmful to the environment as they will increase the acidity of water,
therefore, sour water stripping process is vital in order to remove these harmful elements.
First, the sour water is fed into a sour water storage tank where the feed is mixed and
stabilized. Next, Heat is provided by hot stripped sour water (Stripper Feed) to the sour water
from the tank in a heat exchanger before pass it to the sour water stripper. Steam containing
H2S and NH3 is generated and leave the sour water strip through the top of the stripper (off
gas condenser) as off gas while the stripped water is cooled down and returned back to
refinery to reuse for cost effectiveness purposes.

Problem Statement
The sour water stripper configuration is a common unit in refineries. Feed enters at a
temperature of 1000ºF and 40psia with a flow rate of 50000 barrel/day. The mass fraction of
H2S is 0.0070, NH3 is 0.0050 and H2O is 0.9980.

Methodology
1. Open HYSYS V8.0 and begin the simulation by adding components (H2S and NH3).
2. Then, add fluid package Sour Peng-Robinson.
3. Start the simulation by adding in heat exchanger into the window.
4. Then connect the output of heat exchanger with a distillation column which includes
condenser at the upward stream and reboiler at low stream. The output of the upward
stream is expelled as off gas while the product from the downward stream is recycle
back to the heat exchanger. State the reflux ratio to 10 and inlet stage of distillation to
3.
5. Specify all the composition, temperature, pressure for each stream as provided in the
problem statement.
6. Fixed the damping factor to 0.4 and run the simulation.
Result
b. Draw the flowsheet of the process.

c. Run a steady state simulation and shows all the significant steps in the report.
- same as methodology part

d. Calculate the composition of exit streams.

Discussion
e. Discuss about
(i) the findings/results
- as in the results part
(ii) problems encounters in HYSYS software.
- Not enough information given and we have to assume certain value.
-
f. Predict the changes on the composition of H2S in the exit streams if the feed enters at
higher pressure. Explain the reason for the predicted changes.
If the pressure was set at 100 psia, the value of the composition of H2S in the exit streams is
just slightly different.

If the pressure was set at greater value, 2000 psia, the value of the composition of H2S in the
exit streams is totally different with smaller value.

This is because when the higher pressure exerted in the streams, the mole fractions for the gas
will become lower because it will be transform into other state or banished from the streams.
Conclusion
Based on this report, we can conclude that we have learnt on how to treat water by using
heat exchanger and distillation column in HYSYS software. All the information given is
being used to make a complete cycle for heat exchanger and distillation processed and
works. It is very important to key-in the right information in the slots provided in case to
get a better result. Therefore, designing a process flow diagram before entering the
information in the simulation board completely with the labelling to avoid shortage
information. This is important to run the simulation completely and working. Finally, in
case any changes that needed to be predict, it will make us easier because we have put in
the right value and change where the value for the changes given.
