Step 4: Reflect
Reflective Narrative Template
Directions: Reflect on your learning and leadership development in Leadership Cycle 3 by responding to the
following prompts in terms of your leadership capacity to support teacher growth within the professional
learning context of the school. Type your responses within the brackets following each prompt. Do not delete or
alter the prompts.
1. Evaluate your strengths and areas for improvement for coaching and observing a teacher.
Based on this experience, what professional learning needs have you identified for yourself
and explain why you think you should work on them.
[ ] My strengths are that I was recently in a classroom as a teacher, so I have that perspective
when it comes to being observed. I understand the other side. I also have had many years of
experience being a mentor teacher and observing student and co-teachers. My professional
learning needs are to work on formulating my constructive criticism in positive ways so the
teachers don’t feel like I am always comparing it to my old school experience. I want to also
move my position to a more “coaching” type of evaluator when I can with certain teachers.
2. Reflect on and cite evidence of how effectively during this cycle of coaching and observation
you maintained a high standard of professionalism, integrity, and equity.
[ ] I was always well prepared, provided the teacher ample time to prepare their lesson and
gave positive, yet constructive feedback. I was able to point out the good as well as the
constructive points to their lesson in a professional way without upsetting them but rather have
them self reflect on the lesson. I provided them a lesson reflection sheet so they could attend
the post meeting having already thought about their lesson.
3. How did your work in this cycle help you grow as an instructional leader in investigating,
planning, acting, and reflecting on the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully
coach in order to support teacher growth?
[ ] I researched the CSTP’s so I had a clear understanding of each area so when I met with
them I could give feedback for which standard they chose to focus on. The act of actually
having have to observe someone prepares you to think about how you will talk to them and
have them reflect so it can be a valid experience for the both of you. You have to have a
balance of support and criticism in a positive way to help the teacher grow and want to make
improvements.
4. Informed by a continuous improvement mindset, what might be your next steps in support of
this teacher?
[ ] Check in with her periodically and see how she is progressing with her CSTP’s that she
chose as her goals for this year and have her give some evidence on how she is accomplishing
those goals.
