Electronic Communication Systems: The Observation Report For The Lab Exercise

The document summarizes the results of exercises completed as part of an electronics lab. It includes: 1) An exercise where the number of lines in a Fourier spectrum was increased from 10 to 50 to 100, showing the reconstructed signal more closely approximating the original square pulse. 2) An exercise exploring the Fourier spectra of square pulses with varying duty cycles from 0.2 to 0.1 to 0.05, showing more lines required as duty cycle decreases. 3) A final exercise investigating the effect of changing the time period T of a square pulse from 20 to 10 seconds, while keeping the duty cycle at 0.1.

Exercise 01
Q2) Number of positive side bands [N] = 10

Number of negative side bands [N] = 10

Number of lines = Negative side bands + Positive side bands +

Fundamental

= 10+ 10 +1

= 21

Q3)

Figure 1.1- result when N=10

It is not exactly same. The reconstructed signal is not a perfect square pulse. However it is a
close approximation of the original signal. The number of lines specified for the Fourier
spectrum is not enough to derive an accurate graph for the original signal.
Q5)

Figure 1.2- result when N=50

Yes it has changed. By increasing N the number of lines of the Fourier spectrum has been
increased to 101, for the same time period of the original signal [0 to 2 seconds].

Q6)

Figure 1.3- result when N=100

Here the reconstructed signal is even closer to the expected shape of a square
pulse. The reason is because by increasing N, the number of lines of the Fourier
spectrum has been further increased to 201, for the same time period of the original signal [0
to 2 seconds].
Exercise 02

Part A
2) The code plots a square pulse in the time domain from -10 to +10 seconds [-T/2 to T/2], with
a duty cycle of 0.2 and amplitude 1. It also plots its Fourier spectrum in frequency domain.

3)

Figure 2.1- Original signal in time domain( T= 20, duty cycle = 0.2)

Part B

2)

Figure 2.3- Time domain (T=20, duty cycle = 0.1)

Figure 2.4- Frequency domain

The line spectrum has changed because the duty cycle has been decreased from 0.2 to 0.1.
When the duty cycle is reduced the resultant square pulse approaches a perfect square.
Therefore it requires more lines in the Fourier spectrum.
