There are three modeling options for a multi-beam bridge: a line beam model which is a crude preliminary design tool that does not account for transverse distribution or outputs; a grillage model; and a full finite element model.

MODELING OPTIONS FOR A TYPICAL MULTI-BEAM BRIDGE

There are three modelling options for a typical multi-girder steel composite bridge:
 Line beam

 Grillage
 Full finite element model

LINE BEAM

A line beam is a fairly crude tool. It does not take account of transverse distribution, it gives no output
for transverse design (e.g. slab or bracing) and does not consider skew effects. It would not be recommended
for detail design, but is a useful tool for preliminary design.
