When do you use

writing in science?
Why is writing in science
important?
1. Fosters deeper understanding of
important science concepts
2. Develops critical thinking skills
3. Makes your thinking and
reasoning available to teachers for
assessments
Framework for Scientific
Explanation
Three Components:
1. Claim
2. Evidence
3. Reasoning
What is a Claim?
▪ The claim is a statement or
conclusion that answers the
original problem or question that
the students are trying to answer
▪ This is usually the easiest
component to construct
What is evidence?
▪ The evidence is scientific data that
supports the claim
▪ The evidence can either come from
investigations that the students
complete or from second hand sources
such as newspapers, books or the
Internet.
▪ The evidence should be both
appropriate and sufficient.
What is Reasoning?
▪ The reasoning is the justification for
why their data counts as evidence to
support their claim which often
requires the use of scientific principles.
▪ Scientific principles can often help
students determine what data does or
does not count as evidence for a
particular claim.
Evaluating Your Response
▪ After you write a response to a scientific
question, it is important that you review
your work to make sure you included all
three components.
▪ We are going to review sample
responses and your responses based
on rubrics.
Rubric for Question #1
Sample Response
What do you think?

▪ Based on the rubric,

how would you grade
the response?
Sample Response 2
What do you think?

▪ Based on the rubric,

how would you grade
the response?
