Private university in Bangladesh play very important role in the overall development of the country.
Establishment of private universities in Bangladesh was initiated after the institution of the Private
University Act 1992.[1] There are 80[2] such universities that are operational in five out of seven
divisions of the country. Another 12 universities has been approved by UGC recently but yet to start
operation. So the total number of approved private university is now 92 (as of February 2016).
According to University Grants Commission's report 2009; 200,949 students were studying in 51
private universities. It is assumed that the number is now more than 300,000. Though most of the
private universities are situated in urban areas like Dhaka and Chittagong, a larger portion of students
are from the cities. Students from rural area's also studying in private universities and the number is
also significant. In all respects students of private universities are from rich, higher middle and middle
class family.
Different kinds of private universities are in Bangladesh. These can be classified into 4 categories
based on quality of education. Universities like NSU, Brac, East West, UIU, IUB and AIUB which
are also costly is supposed as A grade university among students. Cost effective and quality education
is provided by B grade universities like Stamford, ULAB, IUBAT and UAP. C grade universities are
those which are not providing quality education rather operating for profit. Darul Ihsan, Prime Asia,
Presidency etc. belongs to this category. Bangladesh government recently approved some universities
of those some does not start operation in full run yet. These can be categorized as a D grade
university.
Market Potentials:
Weakness:
Teacher in Private Universities: For opening a new course it is mandatory to appoint 3 full
time senior faculties with a professor and required number of part-time teachers. But most of
the PUs are far from this obligation. A few universities are attracting full-time teachers with
good academic background and higher degree offering high salary and allowances.
Dhaka Based Private University: In the expansion of secondary and higher secondary level
education, the demand of higher education is equally increasing in the whole country, not in
any specific area. But Private universities are centralized in Dhaka. Other than some outer
campuses, in Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal and Rangpur division there is no PU.
Dominated by two subjects: Private universities are offering market oriented or job oriented
subjects. According to Act a PU at least need to open two faculties. So, BBA and Computer
science are the common courses offered in private universities under two faculties.
Private universities have different kinds of problems in their fields. Most universities could not
facilitate required lab, logistic support and skilled teacher for financial problem. Campuses are in
small apartment building and classes are organized in tiny classroom. Universities needed to be in a
large land space. Bureaucratic problem creates obstacle in running the university, sometimes it is too
tough to get approval of new courses. Nowadays, makeup classes are mandatory due to political
instability.
On the other hand, private universities have a great future. At present a larger portion of professionals
of the country's job sector is graduated from private universities. It played a role to create leader,
organizer, marketer, IT professional etc. Bangladeshi private university students in recent days
awarded different international events, their works with different international organization like
NASA. Few private universities are planning to introduce doctoral programs in many fields. It will
open the door of research for Bangladeshi students.
