Structural Analysis Tutorial 7

This document contains 10 structural analysis questions involving determinations of reactions, member forces, displacements, and bending moment and shear force diagrams for beams, trusses, and frames. Questions are accompanied by diagrams and require assumptions of constant EI or AE. Methods include force method, released structure as simply supported beam, and consideration of an internal hinge. The final question analyzes the effects of support settlement on a two-span continuous beam with no external loads.

Question 1: Determine the unknown reactions, and draw the BMD. Solve
using force method. Assume EI to be constant.

Figure 1: Structure for Question 1.

Question 2: The support at A is pinned while those at B and C are rollers.

Assume EI is constant. Find the unknown reactions and draw the SFD.
Solve using two methods – (i) the released structure is a simply supported
beam, (ii) the released structure comprises an internal hinge at B.

Question 3: Determine the reactions at the supports. C is a fixed joint.
Assume EI to be constant. Solve using force method. If you solve this
problem using approximate method, do you get the same reaction as the
force method. What is the error associated with the approximate method.

Question 4: Determine the force in each member of the truss. Find the
displacement of node B. Assume AE as constant.

Question 5: Determine the displacement of the node C. Assume AE as

constant.

ing two span continuous beam.

Question 10: A two-span continuous beam (AB = 4 m and BC = 5 m, E

= 200000 M P a, I = 500 × 106 mm4 , supports B and C are roller) is shown
as below. Support C settles downward 45 mm. Find out all reactions due
to support settlement and draw BMD. There is no external load is applied
in the beam.
