MITEL STREAMLINE FAQS

MITEL STREAMLINE FAQS

GENERAL
Q: What is Mitel® StreamLine?
A: Mitel StreamLine is a Layer 2+ Ethernet data switch that provides a complete parallel voice network over existing
telephone cabling. The solution allows for a non-disruptive, quick and easy way to deploy IP telephony and Unified
Communications (UC) applications. StreamLine comes in 24- and 48-port models. The Mitel Dongles are common to
both models. It is necessary to have one Dongle for every active port on the Mitel StreamLine.

Q: What Mitel communications platforms is StreamLine compatible with?

A: StreamLine is compatible with Mitel Communications Director (MCD), Mitel 5000 Communications Platform (CP)
and the SX-200 IP Communications Platform (ICP). There are no dependencies on these platforms, making
StreamLine completely agnostic. Unfortunately, calls to Mitel support will only be applicable for Mitel solutions.

Q: In what countries is StreamLine approved for use?

A: You can find on MOL (www.mitel.com/molstreamline > Resources > “Mitel StreamLine Approvals”) a list of
countries that Mitel StreamLine is approved for, along with the specific regulatory approvals. If your country is not on
the list, we recommend you first determine if the available approvals are applicable for your region. Otherwise, you
can speak with your Mitel Sales Representative to arrange for additional testing.

Q: Can StreamLine support IP phones across CW1308 cabling?

A: Yes, StreamLine supports CW1308 BT cabling. Please see Mitel product bulletin PB20130023 for all the details.

MITEL STREAMLINE FAQS

FEATURE SPECIFICATIONS
Q: What is the maximum distance I can place the IP phone from the StreamLine?
A: StreamLine is rated at 1,200 ft for either Cat3 or better, and CW1308 cabling. This is based on the minimum 24
wire gauge we specify and under the conditions found in the StreamLine Site Survey.

Q: Can longer distances be achieved with locally powered sets?

A: No, not at the moment. We are in the process of developing support for locally powered sets in a future release.
Please let your Mitel sales representative know of any urgent needs.

Q: What speeds are provided / supported?

A: The per-port signaling connection rates between the Dongle and StreamLine are 10MBs Full Duplex Symmetric.

Q: Are StreamLine and Dongle full duplex (sending and receiving data at the same time)?
A: Yes, traffic between StreamLine, the Dongle and network ports support full duplex.

Q: What is the minimum connection rate?

A: The StreamLine is configured to have a default minimum connection rate of upstream 10 Mbs and downstream
10 MBs.

Q: Will the Dongle or IP devices work without power?

A: The StreamLine is the only component that requires connection to a power source. The Dongles (and IP devices
plugged into the Dongles) receive their power from StreamLine. StreamLine is a complete PoE solution; no local
power pucks or adapters are required for the Dongle or for the IP device plugged into the Dongle.

Q: Does StreamLine support CDP and / or LLDP?

A: The CDP messages are passed through StreamLine and the Dongles. LLDP messages are passed through
StreamLine and the Dongles; the StreamLine switch also allows you to view LLDP information.

Q: How is QoS handled?

A: Because of the point-to-point topology of the Dongle to StreamLine, customized QoS configuration is not normally
required. Please consult the Web GUI or CLI manual for more details. An understanding of networking protocols and
QoS is required to make configuration changes. In most instances, network configuration is not required.

Q: How does StreamLine work with VLANs?

A: VLANs are not required when deploying StreamLine. StreamLine and the Dongles act essentially like a “physical”
VLAN, which is accomplished by isolating the IP voice traffic to the parallel voice network provided by the StreamLine
system. StreamLine has a default configuration of VLAN 1 with all untagged configuration. This will pass all untagged
VLAN traffic or remove the tag from VLAN 1 for data to and from StreamLine and the Dongle. If you need to configure
your IP phones to work with any fixed VLANs (because you may already be using VLANs on your corporate data
network), then you will need to configure StreamLine to handle this VLAN traffic.

Q: Do these solutions support video phone applications?

A: Yes. Video conferencing requires between 300 and 400 kbps. Verify with your video phone VoIP device manuals
the recommended minimum data bandwidth required. The StreamLine switch will deliver symmetric 10 MBs full
duplex to the connected device.

Q: What IP phones are supported?

A: All Class 1, Class 2 and some Class 3 IEEE 802.3af compliant IP devices are supported.

2 | FAQ
MITEL STREAMLINE FAQS

Q: Can I use the second Ethernet Port on the IP sets?

A: Yes, while the framework to support 10 Mb data capabilities is available, please consult the StreamLine Site
Survey document concerning any conditions. Please consult with your Mitel Systems Engineer for any specific
applications.

Q: Can I attach any Ethernet device?

A: The Mitel Dongle supports Ethernet devices that are IEEE 802.3af compliant. The connection rate is 10/100
BaseT. StreamLine supports 10/100/1000 BaseT connections on its GBE copper ports.

Q: What is the maximum POE Class IP device / phone that can be supported?
A: Based on the IEEE 802.3af standard, operational testing is required to determine if the Class 3 IP device you have
will work in your unique network topology (the longer the two-wire length, the less power is available to the IP device.)
First, please verify the IP device power consumption specification. You will need to test your IP device in the final
network topology to ensure the line power draw and IP device power draw do not exceed what the StreamLine
solution can support. StreamLine limits the current drawn on the RJ45 PoE port. If the power draw of the IP phone
(device) and line length exceeds the power that can be provided by StreamLine for the IP phone, then it may not
power up or will reset during operation. If the problem persists, re-test the same IP phone at a shorter cable length to
verify that problem is related to the IP phone drawing more than the maximum rated at the desired line length.

Q: Is there a limit to the number of supported devices off one Dongle?

A: Yes. Each Dongle can power one IP device (all Class 2 and some Class 3).

Q: What are the specifications of the Dongle RJ45 port?

A: The RJ45 port is a 10/100 Mbps Full Duplex Ethernet port that provides IEEE 802.3af compliant voltage to an IP
device connected to the RJ45 port.

Q: How is the Power over Ethernet provided to the IP phone?

A: StreamLine provides power over the Dongle’s RJ45 port. The voltage provided is IEEE 802.3af compliant.

Q: Is StreamLine SNMP compliant?

A: StreamLine supports SNMP messaging on StreamLine statistics.

Q: Does StreamLine support Auto MDIX?

A: Yes. Both GBE ports support straight-through or cross-over cables. The straight-through cable is recommended.

Q: Does the Dongle support Auto MDIX?

A: Yes. The Dongle requires a straight-through Ethernet cable for the IP device.

Q: Can the old Uniphyer stand be used with StreamLine?

A: No, unfortunately Uniphyer and StreamLine are based on incompatible technologies. A very useful side-by-side
comparison table is available in the Mitel StreamLine authorizedPARTNER Presentation, posted on MOL.

SOLUTION CONFIGURATION
Q: Do I specifically need to order the system harnesses and cables?
A: No, Mitel offers these accessory parts for your convenience. If you already have proper cabling systems available
in place, there is no need.

Q: Do I have to order the BT adapter cables?

A: You only need these connector cables if your wall socket is of the BT BS6312 connector type.

Q: Do I have to purchase the power supply FRU part, for every StreamLine order I place?
A: No, each StreamLine Unit already comes with an AC power supply. You should order the quantity you deem
necessary for a FRU.

Q: Can the same power supply FRU part be used in both StreamLine models?
A: Yes, there is only one (1) variant of power supply for both the 24-Port and 48-Port models.

Q: My environments have unreliable AC power. Do you intend to offer a DC power supply?

A: Currently we only offer an AC variant. If there is sufficient demand, we will consider a DC variant.

Q: Most of the time, mechanical parts such as fans fail as well. Do you have a FRU part for the fan?
A: No, the fans inside the StreamLine Unit are not field replaceable. The fans are rated with an MTBF of 50,000 hours
(5 years of continuous operation). Normally, StreamLine operates its fans only when it needs to, depending on
environmental conditions. We expect that period to be even longer, e.g., three times longer.

Q: What is the warranty?

A: StreamLine follows the same standard warranty as the broader MCD family of hardware – it provides for 15
months warranty from date of shipment from Mitel.

Q: Is Extended Hardware Warranty available for StreamLine components?

A: No, it is not.

Q: Is there a demo kit associated with the StreamLine products?

A: No, there are no plans to offer StreamLine Demo Kits. Please speak to your Mitel sales representative for any
possible discounts for in-house purposes.

Q: What is the StreamLine pricing vs. the Phybridge Uniphyer product?

A: From a standard discount level perspective, just with the 24-port switch, StreamLine pricing pulls ahead of
Uniphyer pricing. StreamLine offers an enhanced set of features and a more elegant solution compared to the
Uniphyer. See the presentation on MOL for a side-by-side breakdown.

Q: Can the old Uniphyer stand be used with StreamLine?

A: No, unfortunately the Uniphyer and StreamLine are based on incompatible technologies.

MITEL STREAMLINE FAQS

INSTALLATION
Q: Can I plug in a non-POE device into the Dongle RJ45 connector?
A: Yes, you can connect non-PoE devices like a PC as long as the device is IEEE 802.3af compliant. Devices that
are not compliant may use a special RJ45 cable with power stripped out so they are not damaged.

Q: My Dongle will not connect to the StreamLine, what is wrong?

A: There could be multiple reasons: wiring problems, distance from StreamLine, damaged Dongle, a damaged port
on StreamLine. Please see the Hardware Installation manual for details on troubleshooting connection problems.

Q: Why does my Dongle not power up?

A: There could be multiple reasons, including the port may be turned off, wiring problems, short on wiring, problem
with the StreamLine port, or a problem with the Dongle. Please see the Hardware Installation manual for details on
how to troubleshoot this problem.

Q: How do I configure the Dongle?

A: The Dongle requires no configuration.

Q: Will my network management software see StreamLine and / or the Dongle?

A: StreamLine can be seen on the network. StreamLine can be configured with an IP address for in-band
management (on GBE ports). The Dongle does not have a MAC address and acts as a bridge for the device plugged
into the RJ45 port. It is not accessible from the network. Once an IP device is connected to the Dongle it will be fully
manageable as it is now on the network.

Q: Does StreamLine support Auto MDIX?

A: Yes. Both GBE ports support straight-through or cross-over cables.

Q: What Amphenol / RJ21 connection do I need to connect to StreamLine?

A: A female connector on your RJ21 cable is required to connect the RJ21 cable to the StreamLine Line Interface.

Q: How many pairs in an Amphenol / RJ21 cable are used?

A: Pairs 1-24 are used on StreamLine.

Q: Where is the best location to put the Dongle?

A: The best location for the Dongle is as close to the RJ11 (standard telephone jack) connection as possible; on the
wall next to the RJ11 wall plate or near the RJ11 jack in a cubicle. It is recommended to have the Dongle in a place
where there is reasonable airflow.

Q: Can StreamLine damage old legacy phone equipment if left plugged into wiring?
A: Yes. StreamLine provides up to 54V DC on a single pair. This voltage can potentially damage some digital and
legacy phone equipment. Please ensure all old legacy phones are disconnected from the wiring infrastructure before
you power up StreamLine.

Q: How do I know if my cabling will support these devices?

A: StreamLine and the Dongle are designed to work with 24 AWG (American Wire Gage) wiring. If you were
previously successful using a legacy TDM-based PBX (digital phones and PBX) on the same wiring infrastructure,
then StreamLine and the Dongle will function up to 1200 feet distance over twisted pair cable.

MITEL STREAMLINE FAQS

Q: How do I calculate the UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) requirements for StreamLine?
A: Please use the StreamLine Power Calculator to assist in sizing your UPS and determining the BTUs and
Amperage. This spreadsheet tool is available on MOL and edocs. To determine more accurate UPS power
requirements you should determine the following:
 How much power do the StreamLine and Dongles consume (with line loss)?
 How much power do the IP devices consume with line loss? This is dependent on your unique deployment,
two-wire line lengths, wire gauge used, and IP devices used, and it will be difficult to calculate an exact value.
 How long do you want to your network to remain up?
 It is recommended to test your UPS system to ensure that it will perform as desired under operational load.
(Note: At the initial power up, the maximum power consumption can exceed the operational maximums as
there is an initial in-rush current during the power up of Dongles and IP devices).

Q: What is the default user name and password in StreamLine?

A: Default user name is “admin”. Default password is “admin”.

Q: What if I have forgotten the admin user password?

A: Please try the default user name and password (admin / admin). If this does not work, then contact Mitel Tech
Support. WARNING: It is a complicated and costly process to recover the factory default passwords if you have
forgotten your passwords. Please ensure you keep the passwords stored in a safe place.

Q: What is the default IP address on the StreamLine?

A: 192.168.100.1 (Default GBE IP Address), 192.168.1.1 (Default MGMT IP Address).

Q: Who is certified to install and configure StreamLine?

A: Anyone who has successfully passed the StreamLine Installation and Maintenance Course (T-STRMLN-1.0-IM-
SS).

Q: Is a site survey necessary?

A: Yes, it is an integral part of the StreamLine solution. In fact, Mitel’s Sales Workbench (SWB) quoting tool requires
a response on this question. The information provided will ensure the successful completion of the job on time and on
budget. Most importantly, it contains engineering guidelines that any Mitel technical support will be based on.
