MANIFESTO LIST

President
Robert Cockburn and Jem Godden
Being Presidents of PhySoc we would like to keep a balance between being a
welcoming and inclusive society and having a strong sense of tradition.

We’re running for Presidency as we both would like to improve the society as much
as we can and continue to see it do well in the future, as well as to feed our
unquenchable lust for power. Everyone finds their own place at University, you might
find it in the Sports Club, or with your housemates, but, like a lot of you reading this,
we found it in the Physics Society. We’d like to give back to the Society so that more
people can enjoy this weird outlet from our soul sucking degree.

To some people, the society is just a social they go to every couple of weeks, which
is fine if that's all they want to do, but we want to communicate to everyone that the
society is so much more than that. One way is to increase the exposure of PhySoc
sports to the rest of the society, by getting our sports secs to delegate different
members to write a weekly match report. We will expand on the idea of daytime
activities, aiming to have no more than four throughout the year. These include
sports tournaments, beach/museum trips, and a society wide Touch-Duckes
Combine, for both the rounders and the touch teams.

We have a few more fun events to have during the Summer and Winter balls, such
as a charity blind date, which shouldn't take more than 5 minutes on the stage. We
also want to add some non-sport awards to the ball, assuming we have time after
Calvert’s Oscar-winning monologue.

‘Can we make an emphasis on physcest?’ - Jem Godden 07753190868

On the topic of tradition, there are many important things we’d like to carry on doing.
Firstly, we’d like to keep a firm grasp on PhySoc’s two sizeable Balls, one in Summer
and one in Winter. We’d also like to continue having our hugely fun fortnightly socials
and bigly enjoyable sports teams. Encouraging interactions between all the years is
also important to us, as not only does it make the society feel more welcoming, but it
helps make your time at university much easier.

We believe the society has grown in the past few years due to how welcoming it is,
as well as the need to get Hugo Brady’s approval as a fresher. Part of our method
will be to revive PhySoc’s social media. Delegating different people to film and
photograph the ongoing of PhySoc and PhySoc sport, if people fail this we do it
ourselves, since Rob is known to be great at photos and social media... We’ll also
make the actions of committee more transparent, by making the minutes available to
all as well as using the PhySoc email to take suggestion of what to be discussed in
committee meetings.

We’re keeping the trip abroad a surprise for now, hopefully the suspense doesn’t get
your Zantes in a twist.
Vice-President
Emily Francis-Pollin
Writing this manifesto has proven to be more difficult than I initially thought it would
be as I am both awful at writing things and not funny... Thus, I am so not running for
GenSec – newsletters are not my thing.

It was a commonly asked question last year as to whether or not I actually played
netball... however I hope that over the course of this year in my role as sports sec I
have proven that I am reliable and dependable, as well as being organised enough
to tell people when they have to turn up to things.

I asked Will Doherty for a quote about me and he just sat there for 5 minutes and
couldn’t think of anything. I then asked Tess Dwyer who did the exact same thing,
showing that I am consistent at least.

However, the most important part of this role is obviously the stash talk. Now last
year Bex produced one of the finest manifestos I have ever read, as to why I have
struggled so much to follow in her footsteps. But I thought I would at least give it a
try. Here we go...

**cough cough**
I will do stash EVEN earlier. BOOM
So, yea, that’s me.

My aim is to make PhySoc a more approachable and inclusive environment whilst

also playing a larger part in decision making process within the society, such as
aiding with both the summer and winter balls and the yearly trip abroad. I also
believe social media needs to become a more integral part of the society, so it will
become my mission to promote it as much as I can. Documenting what is happening
throughout the year is a vital part of following the progress of the society, inspiring a
wider group of people within the physics community to join in the fun, as well as
encouraging future generations of PhySoc to further enhance the quality of the
society.

All I can say now is... Vote EFP for VP
Over and out kiddos xx
Social Secretary

George Bishop and Ali Marsland

(1) Easily accessible socials.

Over the year we have heard complaints about the cost which goes in to the
themes for some of the socials. Socials with full on dressing up themes we
want to keep as they are funny for everyone who takes part however we aim
to have some socials which cost less money for example an ugly jumper\t-
shirt social. We can also have BYOB socials as they are cheaper for students.

(2) Promote socialising between years.

We aim to have more family or team events like quizzes which will allow
socialising between years more easily.

(3) Socials which are fun with drinking and without

Socials like this firstly allow people to have fun if they aren’t drinking. Also if
people have early lectures the next day this allows people to tap out early.
Examples of this are going to see a movie, bowling or a scavenger hunt like
what was held earlier this year.

(4) Socials on different days.

Everyone dislikes having to roll out of bed for a 9:30 after a social. We hope to
mitigate that by holding socials on alternating days so that people with early
starts on one day can more easily come to some socials.

(5) Joint socials

Socials between other societies like chemistry or maths will allow people to
make friends from other courses. Next year we could actually go to the
sciences bar crawl.

Why vote for us?

• We are avid fans of VKs.

• Ali is easy to find if you get lost in a social.

• George is the best shuffle dancer in Exeter.

• Experience with volunteering for other things and willing to put in a lot of work
if required.

Sóley Birna Júlíusdóttir & Sarah Amass
Sóley & Sarah’s Social Sec Smanifesto

Sóley and Sarah - this year’s power couple -

are running to be your Social Secs for 2018/19.
After a lively freshers year of PhySoc socials,
we feel we’re the best team to continue Tess &
Jem’s legacy.

Between us we are organised, reliable, and

approachable. We already have a good
foundation for holding this position as Sarah
has been on committee this year and Sóley
holds a committee position for another society,
preparing us for the level of work required and we can continue to improve the
society as a whole. Some of our key objectives include more emphasis on activity
based socials, good club deals for the society, and sports based social throughout
the year.

Ideas for socials:

• Olympic Social: This could be a phamily social, where the groups send
a competitor
for each challenge, e.g., a Usain Bolt-Off, Cardiac Hill
Climb, “Long Jump” (this will be
explained if we get the position xoxo)

• Sports based socials in collaboration with the Sports Secs, e.g.

rounders, dodgeball,
(beach) volleyball

• A few themed socials, but not too many. It’s all about quality, not
quantity.

• Rameoke Social – it’s on a Friday night so we already know no one will

have
deadlines (jk TB to Rosie’s social)

• Term 1 and 2 quizzes, because those were good fun

More socials with activities before we go out
Things we will do:

• Organise a deal with Rosie’s before Fever closes and Rosie’s gets swamped again

• Be approachable – if anyone has ideas for socials we will welcome them, but also
if
anyone has any problems (e.g. with their Physoc Phamilies) we will be
happy to help
and make sure everyone knows who to contact.

• Continue the contacts we have with Unit 1 – already have a finger in the Unit 1 pie

because Sóley is on Disney committee (surprise surprise) (p.s this doesn’t
mean
Disney themed socials) (p.p.s unless you really want them)

• Communicate with year reps to find out what we’re doing well, and get roasted for

what we’re not

• Bring back decorations for first floor study area at Christmas, Halloween, etc.

Vote Sóley & Sarah for Social Sec

Max Painter & Jack Scott

Our names are Max and Jack. Most of you will know us well, due to Jack’s roles over
the past 2 years within committee, as first year rep and sports secretary. With Max
being the Robin to Jack’s Batman. (“WHAT?”- Painter M, Accessed March 2018)

All joking aside, we are two dedicated Physoc members, with the pair of us having
attended the majority of socials throughout our two years in Exeter. This has given
us great experience of what will go down amongst our fellow social-goers. For
example, one thing we are keen on expanding on, if we are elected, is the idea of
family socials. This idea has great scope for introducing the incoming freshers to
older years and to help welcome them into our society. This is something that we
have both found useful in our first years, as shown by our links with Physoc
veterans.

Many will know that we both love to party, with our frequent pub trips, Max having
been social sec two years in a row for his rugby club and Jack having co- organised
an extremely successful sport’s social this year. However, we want you to know that
we are not just about the beer. We enjoy meeting and talking to new people, in all
environments. Thus, we are intending to introduce more non-drinking events, such
as coffee mornings and various day trips, alongside many of the socials we all know
and love, plus some new and exciting ideas!

Here are just a few of these ideas:

• PhySoc Summer Beach Party

• PhySoc Family Sports Day

• Increasing the number of events raising money for charities.

• Plus many more fresh and interesting events.

It would mean so much to both of us if you were to vote Jack and Max, aka the
cutest couple in Physoc (see above), for Social Secs and we firmly believe we have
what it takes to provide a very dynamic year of social activities for all tastes!!

Thank you for taking your time to read our Social Secretary Manifesto, Jack and Max

Treasurer

Joshua Mitchell Cole

Hi everybody, I’m Josh a second year and I’m running for treasurer of Physoc for
2018/19.

As treasurer, I would like to work for you and help with expenses as much as I can. I
understand that money is tight and it’s hard to balance bills, food and VK’s. I want as
many people as possible to go to socials, get stashed up and hit Amsterdam. To
help you with this I will provide the estimates of costs earlier, so you can save and
delay the overdraft that bit longer. I will also provide a bi-weekly financial breakdown
to show you where the money you spent on the society has been used. This
information will be broken down to make the society more cost effective and ensure
that you get more for your money.

During my second year, I have been balancing both the huge work load (RIP second
years) with rowing. Did I mention I row? With training 6 days a week and this work
load I have proven I can balance my time effectively. After all, if I have time to make
memes then I have time to be your treasurer.

I want to put my all into this and continue the fantastic track record left by our
committee, so I hope you consider me to be your treasurer.

Josh Mitchell Cole

Adda Trodd

It is the role of a treasurer to budget and carefully plan the usage of a society’s money.
As Physoc treasurer I will take on this responsibility in order to help organise, save
and spend the society’s money in a way that most benefits Physoc and its members.

• I will make sure all the money spent on Physoc, from sign-ups and sport to
ticket sales is properly accounted for and there is a clear record of all
expenditure.
• I aim to make it clear to every member of Physoc where their money goes.
• I would also like to communicate with all members of the society, for example
through the year reps to make sure the expenditure is aligned with the things
that are most valued by the society as a whole.
• I will collaborate with other members of the society to plan the best socials
possible within the budget.
• I will communicate with the guild to make sure the Physoc bank account is
handled in the best way possible and efficiently resolve any major issues.
• Using circle for tickets and sport signups would be beneficial as it is quick and
easy which would encourage more new people to sign up. The money made
will be much easier to keep track of electronically than using cash. Also, as it
stands for every new person signed up for circle Physoc would make an extra
10 pounds which could further subsidise socials and balls.

Physoc has played a large role in my life at university through all the socials and
amazing friends I have made through the society. I am running for treasurer to help
maintain the great socials and overall fun and welcoming atmosphere. I am organised,
responsible and hardworking which I believe are the key skills for a treasurer to have.
Vote for me and I vouch to support Physoc and help it develop and grow over the
coming year.
Tom Nicol

“Excel is my bitch” – Tom Nicol everyday

I pledge, as your aspiring treasurer, to make certain that when payments are made
they are recorded and make certain that every payment is billed correctly. I pledge to
use my experience in the field to run the society finances efficiently and smoothly.

It is my promise that I shall bring my all to the role and keep everything clear and
precise. I am to bring clarity and transparency to the role of treasurer.
General Secretary
Luke Parker

Who am I?
A 20-year-old heterosexual, middle-class, British, white male with what some define
as ginger hair, that was beaten in a boxing match by a 50-year-old who may or may
not have had leukaemia. Believe it or not, I used to weight 17.5 stone (oink oink).
Unfortunately, I have not turned up to as many physics socials as I would’ve liked
(they’re too expensive). I have survived being rejected from DSP twice in one night
(unlike Coates) whilst having booze confiscated off me. But most importantly, Pete
Vukusic and GP know my name and my story.

Why should you vote for me?

I can potentially provide discounts at socials through my growing industry contacts.
I’m disabled and if you don’t that makes you worse than a racist, it makes you an
ableist. You wouldn’t not support Oscar Pistorius, so why would you not support me?

Why Gen Sec and not president?

I feel that as gen sec, I will be able to support physoc more than any other role, I aim
to introduce a “potential opportunities” tab into the fortnightly (yes, I’m giving myself
more deadlines) emails that I will be sending to all members. Where you can find the
latest relatable internships, master’s degrees or simple open days that will range
from the directly related PHD’s to these wacky VAC schemes proposed by London
Law firms.
We all know that physoc is already great we must remember that the “impossible is
nothing”.

I would like to take this empty space for thanking Charles DH Williams who makes
this course possible. No SJW’s were offended in the making but perhaps not the
viewing of this manliestfesto.
Kate Selkirk

KATIE SELKIRK FOR PHYSOC GEN SEC!

Why I want to be your General Sec
• Some of my closest friends are members of PhySoc and I hope that through this
role I would get to know even more people within the society.
• I would like to introduce new ideas to the role of general sec.
• I’m approachable and friendly with people in all years so hope that I can easily
communicate with new members of PhySoc.

What I would bring to the society

• I love that this year PhySoc got its own snapchat account. I would increase the
use of this and create collaborative snapchat stories for events like socials and
balls.
• I would aim to post regularly on the instagram account. As said by presidential
candidate Rob, “The PhySoc instagram is so much prettier when it’s run by girls.”
• I would make the newsletter accessible through a link on the PhySoc Facebook
page so that people who don't subscribe or check their emails are still able to see
it.
• I really liked Vicky’s competitions she sometimes included in newsletters. I would
happily continue something similar to ‘win a VK from VK'. Win a shot from
Selkirk?
• PhySoc member of the week! Whether they’ve gone the extra mile for their
costume at a social or been particularly involved in PhySoc sport, I don’t think this
should go unnoticed. I would feature one person in each newsletter with a
mention of what they’ve done in PhySoc.

FAQ’s
• Instead of ‘win a shot from Selkirk’ can it be ‘win some Ket from Katie’? –
Sure, if you wanna get cut off from the guild
• Isn’t this your 3rd time running for a Gen Sec position? – Yes, I’m more
desperate than Isaac Evans on tinder
• Why should we trust you with handling risk assessments when you fall
over at nearly every social? – I’m yet to fall over and smash my teeth so I’m
already doing better than a certain committee member
• If you win can you get the PhySoc logo as a tattoo? – I’d rather go to
Wednesday TP in Loughborough stash
• When’s the Luke Parker diss track dropping? – Unlike him I don’t have that
sh*t in the bag so you’ll have to wait
Sports Secretary

Emily Fellingham & Sol Read

Hello everyone, we’re Sol & Emily and we’d like to be your sports secs for next
year.
Boasting a good knowledge of the intramural system, and experience in
football, netball and rugby, you’d be in good hands. We aim to continue the great
success of this year’s intramural teams, while also keeping the legendary Physoc
gold shining bright. Furthermore, we’d really like to introduce at least one Physoc
ladies football team; the more the merrier in the Physoc sportz family.

Not unlike this year, we’d run casual taster sessions for all Physoc teams, with
another taster in ‘Refreshers Week’ for anyone who might not have joined in first
term.
Off the pitch, as well as the termly sports socials, we’d collaborate with the
Socials Secs for sporty socials for all, such as rounders and dodgeball.

Thanks for reading! Emily & Sol

2nd Year Rep
Gareth Clift

Why would I be a good second year rep you say? For one I beat Ali Marsland in a vk
bolt off so I know how to get a job done. Secondly I can relay messages well and
have a good grasp on this thing called Facebook. Lastly I will do a great job because
of my skills in time management proved by completing astro labs nearly every week.

Why do I want to be second year rep? Basically in a nutshell I want to be able to

stand at the front like Sol does and tell everyone important messages. Also I would
like to put forward your views to the committee to keep physoc sweet and sexy.

Someone once said to me 'you're actually not that bad' and this shows that I am very
approachable and that if you ever have any issues that I will listen and make sure
they are sorted. I am always up for a friendly chat over a drink, bite to eat or even
whilst you're holding my hair back whilst I spew everywhere but the toilet. I know a
fair few people in this lovely society called physoc meaning I can make sure
messages get through the pipe line and your views are accounted for.

Lastly, Ewan said he would do a shoe for every vote I get so that'll be a laugh.
3rd Year Rep
Alex Coates

About me

Usually, the general advice is to keep the “about me” section brief in the interest of
keeping the reader’s interest. But in the case of me, I’m told the less you all know
about me, the better.
The crushing realisation of personal embarrassment aside, I’d like to introduce
myself as Alex Coates; the quiet, bumbling 2nd year who definitely hasn’t ever
urinated on the floor of Katie Selkirk’s house when blind drunk (and then forgot).
I’m running for Third Year Rep because I’ve been part of Physoc for two years now
and I’ve enjoyed it immensely, but I’ve never had a role of responsibility within
Physics1 and like a WWE announcer when John Cena enters the ring, I have to say,
“the time is now”.

What must a Third Year Rep do?

From my deep, intricate research of the role (I messaged Rob Cockburn once) I
discovered that I must be the first point of contact between the committee and my
year. This will be mostly through the year chat, in which I am a regular contributor
when it comes to anything not related to the course.
The responsibility includes advertising socials to win over people in the year who’re
on the fence when it comes to attendance, I will use my powers of intimidation
persuasion to get people coming along and having fun.
When representing the year in committee, my experience in debating (as shown
below) will come in handy.

Reviews about me

“Yeah he’s alright sometimes” – Edward Horchover

“He’s the bag to my side” – Luke Parker
“I slept with my housemate over a game of fives” – Max Painter
“I respect him as much as I don’t respect myself” – Tom Nicol
