Reading Passage

There is no universally agreed upon definition of active citizenship, but it generally refers to participation in public life at local, national, or international levels. Active citizens are not necessarily rule followers, but can work to challenge and change rules for the common good. A group of Moroccan students set up a citizenship club to encourage volunteering. They launched a blood donation project in response to hospitals' shortages. Nabil publicized the drive on Facebook and 92 donors participated on World Blood Donor Day in June. Rahma said blood donation is a free, altruistic act after making her donation.

Active Citizenship

There is no universally accepted definition of active citizenship. However, there is a general

agreement that citizenship refers to the participation of the individual in public life. This can be local,
national or international. The term is usually used at local level to refer to citizens who become
actively involved in the life of their societies by dealing with problems and causing change. At
national level, it can move from voting to conducting campaigns and taking part in the political life.
At international, global active citizens can be involved in movements to reduce poverty or fight
racism…..etc.

Active citizens are not necessarily people who follow the rules and laws of a society. They can
challenge and change them for the sake of the common good of everyone. There is a general set of
values that can be associated with active citizens. These include justice, democracy, tolerance,
courage and willingness to listen and work in groups.

A good example of active citizens is that of a group of students at a Moroccan public high school who
set up a Club for Citizenship. Their goal was to encourage their mates to take responsibility and try to
do something to show some of their citizenship. The club launched a project for blood donating.
“There is a shortage of blood in hospitals,” Nabil pointed out. “Blood is needed everywhere and we
need to do something about this,” he added. When Nabil spread the news on Facebook, the
responses to his page were fantastic. The Provincial Blood Centre got involved and the partners
agreed on the following slogan: “A Drop of Blood Saves a Life.”

The date to donate was fixed to coincide with the World Blood Donor Day in June. Ninety two donors
responded. Speaking after making her donation, Rahma said: “The best things in life are free. Blood
donating is an altruistic act.”
