Introduction

Wipro originally had started as a vegetable oil company from an old mill which was founded by
Azim Premji’s father in 1947 . Azim Premji, a graduate in Electrical Engineering from Stanford
University, proceeded to be the leader of the company at the age 21 after his father passed away
. After taking the leadership he changed and transformed Wipro (Western India Vegetable
Products Ltd) to a company that manufactured laundry soap, wax and tin containers, hydrogenated
cooking oils and later established Wipro Fluid Power to manufacture hydraulic and pneumatic
cylinders in 1975. Then it was valued at 2 million dollars .

In late 1970s IBM , Intel and other foreign MNCs had to leave India due to Janata Regimes Ideas
for self sufficient India. Wipro being an Indian company then entered the Information
Technology Sector. In about two years it began to develop its new computers .By 1981 it started
to sell its finished products. Thus that made Wipro India’s first computer makers .The company
had obtained licence in technology from Sentinel Computers in United States and then began to
build India’s first mini-computers. Wipro then hired innovative managers who had technical
knowledge and lot of business experience.

After building the computers and minicomputers it moved to Software development .By 1980 it
started to develop customised software packages for its hardware customers. All these upcomings
led to a subsequent expansion in the IT business. The first Indian 8086 chip was invented shortly
thereafter.

Wipro Technologies has now been a pioneer in India’s IT business for over a period of 25 years.
It is largest outsourced R&D provider and is a leading organisation in remote delivery of IT
Services.Wipro is globally recognized for its innovative approach towards delivering business
value and its commitment to sustainability. It has been a global provider of consulting
services,IT services, infrastructure outsourcing and business process services.Today Wipro is a

be a great platform to have many opportunities in working with the latest technologies alongside
the innovative minds .

Major dimensions of Organization Culture

1. Attention to detail : This dimension can be clearly understood via an incident that an
employee at Wipro had narrated. In 1982-83 the marketing executive at Wipro was being
transferred to chennai and before his departure premji wanted a detailed presentation for
his marketing approach in Chennai , target markets and customer identification
strategies. The executive though had not included some of the information about few
clients.Though Premji could figure that out and pointed him this fact after the meeting
.This incident clearly depicts how Wipro’s founder had an eye for details and also used
prepare himself before reviews also.
2. People Orientation: Wipro itself claims that being People oriented is one of the main
reasons behind its success. It touches many lives and makes differences in the lives of
employees ,customers ,partners and stakeholders alike .Thus by encouraging feedback
and promoting an open culture Wipro clearly gives a strong evidence for the fact that
excellence is not a destination but a journey of continuous improvement

critical factors as determined by WIPRO. Framework of Innovation which covers
guidelines right from the idea and taking it all the way to commercialization of the idea,

rewards and recognition policy which motivates employees to come up with innovative
ideas. Employees post their ideas at WIPRO Intranet which makes the whole process web
enabled. Wipro constituted innovation teams, conducted workshops, and issued
innovation process guidelines to all its managers and business group heads. CTO and five
permanent members evaluates the idea and its commercial viability in Innovation
Council.
4. Team orientation: Execution is crucial in each and every task. Premji started at Wipro
driven by one basic idea – to build an organization which was deeply committed to
morals and values, in the firm belief that success in business would eventually and
inevitably follow. Unflinching commitment to values continues to remain at the heart of
Wipro. Premji strongly believes that ordinary people are capable of pulling off
extraordinary tasks when organized into highly organised teams. He take personal interest
keenly in developing leaders and teams and additionally invests time as faculty in
Wipro’s leadership development programs. Manager Excellence Framework: Manager
capability building was identified as a specific centre area of focus, after the 2011 EPS.

includes a set of resources available to managers helpful in boosting the team
performance, build process capability and chart out self-learning, motivational and
