1.
The diagram shows a velocity-time graph for a vehicle. Calculate the following:
a. The acceleration from O to A (Ans: 2.86 m/s2)
b. The acceleration from A to B (Ans: -2.4 m/s2)
c. The total distance traveled (Ans: 35 m)
d. The average velocity (Ans:5.83 m/s)
2. A lift has a mass of 1200 kg. It is raised by a rope passing around a winding drum and a
counter balance mass of 1000 kg hangs down on the other end. The drum has a radius of
1m, a radius of gyration of 0.707m and a mass of 1000.3 kg. During operation, the lift is
accelerated upwards from rest at a rate of 2 m/s2 for 2 seconds. The lift then rises at a
constant velocity for another 10 seconds, followed by the removal of the drive torque
from the drum shaft, after which the lift coasts to a halt. Determine the following:
a. The maximum and minimum force in the rope during its operation.
(Ans: 14.17 kN and 9.81 kN)
b. The torque applied to the drum during the acceleration period
(Ans: 7.362 kNm)

3. Sand falls from rest 0.5 m vertically onto a chute. If the sand then slides with a velocity
of vc = 2 m/s down the chute, determine the relative velocity of the sand just falling on
the chute at A with respect to the sand sliding down the chute. The chute is inclined at an
angle of 400 with horizontal. (Ans: VA/O = -3.13j, VA/C = -1.53i-1.84j)
4. The scaffold S is raised hydraulically by moving the roller at A toward the pin at B. If A
is approaching B with a speed of 1.5 ft/s, determine the speed at which the platform is
raising as a function of θ. The 4 ft links are pinned connected at their midpoint.
(Ans: 𝑦̇ = 𝑥̇ 𝑐𝑜𝑡𝜃) Hint: Express y in terms of
θ and x in terms of θ. Then obtain 𝜃̇ in terms
of both 𝑥̇ and 𝑦̇ . Having 2 equations, you can
then eliminate 𝜃̇.

5. The wheel is rotating with an angular velocity ω = 8 rad/s. At the instant θ = 300 and ϕ =
600. Show that:
a. 𝑟𝐵/𝑂 = −0.13𝑖 + 0.075𝑗
b. 𝑉𝐵/𝑂 = 0.6𝑖 + 1.04𝑗
c. 𝑟𝐴/𝐵 = 0.25𝑖 + 0.433𝑗
d. The angular velocity of rod AB is -4.16 rad/s.
e. The velocity of the collar is 2.4 m/s to the right
Hint: In determining VA/O and ωAB, observe that the collar is constrained to move ONLY
in the horizontal direction.
