Unit Rate With Fractions Notes

To find a unit rate: 1. Identify the numerator and denominator 2. Divide the numerator by the denominator 3. Express the unit rate as the first unit per the second unit Some examples show finding the unit rate of messages per hour, packages per minute, cups of water per batch of brownies, gallons of paint per gate, and steaks per hour. Complex fractions can be converted to simpler forms using the least common factor before dividing.

Unit

Rate with Fractions

Notes
To find the unit rate:
1.  Determine what is the first quantity (numerator) and
what is the second quantity (denominator)
*look for clues like “how many miles per hour”*
2. Divide the first amount by the second amount
3. Write the unit rate as # (first unit) per (second unit)

Example: If Mr. Rojas sends 34 text messages in 4 hours,

how many messages does he send per hour?
34 messages
à 34 ÷ 4 = 8.5
4 hours
He sends 8.5 messages per hour
Jose can deliver 34 packages in 2 hours. What is his
rate, in packages per minute?

34 packages ÷ 2 = 17 packages per hour

17 packages ÷ 60 minutes = 0.2833333…

0.2833333… = 0.28
Jose can deliver 0.28 packages per minute
Unit Rates with Fractions

If you are dividing two fraction unit rates (with a complex

fraction) remember to KCF
