WORK METHOD STATEMENT

FOR
STREET LIGHTING

SCOPE OF WORK

The scope of work covers the following activities such as setting out, excavation works, laying
cable, installation of pole, termination and testing.

MACHINERY AND MAN POWER

The following equipment and manpower are proposed to be used for this activities.
1) Crane - 1 no
2) Backhoe - 1 no
3) Electrical Drill - 2 nos.
4) Electrical Grinder - 2 nos.
5) Pipe Bender - 2 nos
6) Surveyor - 1
7) Supervisor - 1
8) Skill workers - 5
9) General workers - 2

LAYING CABLES

1. Shop drawing and product specification shall be submitted to Consultant for approval
before commencement the work.
2. The exact location, size, length, alignment and depth of excavation shall be stated in the
shop drawing.
3. Setting out and alignment of cable route shall be pegged at site.
4. Cable trench shall be excavated from down stream towards up stream using a backhoe.
5. Cable trench shall be excavated at lease 900 mm from the finish ground level.

1
6. 150 mm sand shall be filled as bed in the open trench.
7. Cable material and type of cable shall be check first before laying the cable.
8. Cable drum shall be placed at one end and support by mild steel supporter with 75 mm pipe
as roller.
9. Cable shall be pulled slowly by manual to the required length and place in the trench.
10. The laid cables shall be inspected by Consultant before back filling.
11. 150 mm sand shall be filled over the top surface of the cable.
12. The top of sand shall then be protected by PVC cable tray.
13. For road crossing the cable shall be laid in the G.I. pipe.
14. Cable trench shall be back fill with granular materials.

POLE INSTALLATION

1. Pole materials and all accessories shall be submitted to Consultant for approval before
commencement of works.
2. The exact location of pole shall be pegged on site.
3. Firstly pole shall be placed at each location. Excavation work then can be proceed after
confirmed the location.
4. To avoid the tarmac from scratched, wooden support or plywood shall be used to protect the
machinery and equipment.
5. Lantern, terminal blocks and pole accessories shall be installed on ground before the bottom
of pole fixed in ground.
6. Using flexible wire rod, the internal wiring cables shall be inserted through the bottom end
of the top section of pole until it reaches the cross-arm joint.
7. Then the wires shall be pulled out from the top section to lantern for connection. Extra
length of the cables shall be provided for lantern termination.
8. The lantern shall be installed and then the top section shall be assembled as a complete
section.
9. Cable shall be inserted into the bottom section of pole. All internal wiring in the pole
section shall be checked and not injured.
10. The bottom section of pole shall be fixed in ground by using mobile crane or backhoe.
Approximately 1.5m of bottom section shall be fixed in ground.
11. The LV cable shall be inserted from bottom of pole to termination board.

2
12. The top section cross-arm shall be 90° to door orientation.
13. Minor adjustment may be required after pole erection to maintain the 90° orientation by
slightly loosening the jam bolt or readjust the cross-arm bracket.
14. All the connections of mechanical and electrical shall be double check to confirm that all
screws and grub screws are well tightened.
15. Then concreting of base shall be done when vertically is confirm in good order.
16. All debris, off-cut cables and rubbish shall be removed from site.

LV TERMINATION

1. Firstly the insulation readings shall be check before termination process. The readings of the
LV cables shall be satisfactorily good prior to termination.
2. Meggar Tester or Multi-Tester shall be used to carry out test on the continuity of the cable.
This test also to ensure that the cable laid are correct according to the designation shown in
the drawing.
3. Once the continuity test is done, organize the cables inside the service door.
4. Measure the LV cable to appropriate length up to the terminal links. Remove the outer PVC
insulation and the Steel Wire Armour (SWA).
5. Tie the SWA with copper wire band before earthing cable in connected to it.
6. Place the earth wire terminal end onto the SWA and secure it with copper wire bands.
Solder then to ensure that it has s good earth bonding.
7. Insert the heat shrink into the cable and cover the soldered bands.
8. Apply heat evenly back and forward through out the heat shrinkable tubing using torch.
Ensure the heat shrinks the tubing from one end to the other to form a solid piece of cable.

TESTING

1. Before final termination to the poles and after termination to the poles a Meggar Test must
be carried out. The instruments used for testing the cables are Multi-Tester and Meggar
Tester (1000 mΩ).

3
2. The tests to be carried out by these testers are for continuity conductors, insulation
resistance of the cable conductor plus polarity of the cable.
