Grade: 5th.
Subject: Science

Total number of sessions: 9 (45 min. each)

Session - 1
 Objective: i) Students will be able to describe the characteristics /features of each planet of our
solar system

 Need to know: To know about features of all the planet of our solar system.

 Interest factor: Song on solar system.

 Time frame: 3 Sessions.

 Teacher’s aid: i) 5th. Grade textbook (Connect with Science – 5)

ii) Projector
iii) Laptop
iv) Worksheet.

 Teacher’s interaction: Teacher will discuss basic information about solar system such as why
it is called solar system, meaning of celestial objects and different celestial bodies present in
solar system.

 Student’s interaction: Group discussion and presentation.

 Content presentation: Students will be divided in group of 4. (Assuming total number of

student in class is 32 so 8 groups will be there representing one planet).

Students discuss the characteristics features of the planets in their

respective groups and then present the presentation in front of the class.

2) Students complete the “Solar System Table”

 Summary: Power point presentation on solar system showing the pictures of planets with their
unique features, names and number of moons present and any current event related with planet
took place or latest findings about planet.

 Assignment: Worksheet of identifying planets from its main characteristic / feature.

1
Session – 4

 Objective: i) Students will be able to understand and compare size of planets.

 Need to know: To understand relative size of earth in comparison of other planets.

 Interest factor: Decorating balls with water color to make them look like planet.

 Teacher’s aid: i) 5th. Grade textbook (Connect with Science – 5) ii) Water color.
iii) Water iv) Coloring brush (4 – 5)
v) Projector vi) Laptop

 Teacher’s interaction: Students will be divided in group of 4. (Assuming total number of

student in class is 32 so 8 groups will be there representing one planet). Each will be bringing
one ball (told previous day to students to bring balls as table shown below) and teacher will
display picture of planet on projector and student will decorate their balls to look like planet they
representing.

Planet Representative sphere Diameter

Mercury Steel shot ball 0.8 cm

Venus Marble (Clear) 2.2 cm

Earth Marble (Dark) 2.3 cm

Mars Small Marble 1.3 cm

Jupiter Basketball 25 cm

Saturn Volleyball 21 cm

Uranus Large ball 9.5 cm

Neptune Soft ball 9 cm

 Summary: Teacher will display actual size of all the planets on projector and students will be
writing that in their rough book in tabulated format which includes above mentioned table and
actual size of planets.

 Assessment: Student / group will display their decorated model planet to class and will
tell about size of ball and actual size of planet.

 Assignment: Write down the table neatly in booklet.

2
PLANETS OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM ACTUAL DIAMETER OF EACH PLANET

Mercury 4,878 km
Venus 12,756 km
Earth 12,104 km
Mars 6,794 km
Jupiter 1,42,984 km
Saturn 1,20,536 km
Uranus 51,108 km
Neptune 49,532 km

Session – 5

 Objective: i) Students will understand that why life is only possible on Earth and not on any
other planet.

 Need to know: Required factors to support life on Earth.

 Interest factor: Video watching about the factors responsible for existence of life on
Earth.

 Teacher’s aid: i) 5th. Grade textbook (Connect with Science – 5) ii) Laptop
iii) Projector

 Teacher’s interaction: (i) Teacher will first tell students to write down what all things / factors
they use in daily life.
(ii) Then teacher will tell students to cut down list to the things / factors
without which human being cannot live / survive.

(iii) List with students will be probable factors required for existence of
life. So teacher will tell students to speak one factor from the list and explain its requirement for
survival or existence.

(iv)Teacher will then discuss the required factors for existence of life
and will show a video for the same.

 Summary: Teacher will write factors required / not required for existence of life on board and
students have to identify which one is required and which one is less important.

 Assessment: Write down the factors to support life on Earth.

 Assignment: Student will find out possibility of having life on Moon / Mars or any other
planet.

3
Session – 6

 Objective: i) To understand internal structure of Earth and students will be able to know what
earth is made up of.

 Need to know: To know what is there inside Earth (below soil) and what it is made up
of.

 Interest factor: Clay activity to represent internal structure of Earth.

 Time frame: 2 Sessions

 Teacher’s aid: i) 5th. Grade textbook (Connect with Science – 5) ii) Laptop
iii) Clay (Orange, Yellow and Green Colour) iv) Projector

 Teacher’s interaction: (i) Teacher will first tell students to write down what could be there
inside earth with their imagination.

(ii) Then teacher will tell students about internal structure of Earth and
shown video for the same.

(iii) Then comparison is to be done with list students made in beginning

of lecture with how much that is related with real one.

(iv)Then activity of layers of Earth is to be done with help of clay. First

small ball of orange colour clay then of yellow and then it is to be covered with green colour clay.
Then to represent internal structure that ball made of clay is to be cut horizontally and different
colour clay displays different layers of Earth.

 Student’s interaction: Students will prepare scaled diagram (scale of 1 cm = 100 km) on
chart paper. (Student will have to bring their chart paper and colours by their own).

 Summary: Teacher will speak any one / Two characteristic of any particular layer of Earth and
students have to identify name of layer about which teacher is telling.

 Assessment: Students will write down the characteristics/ features in rough book.

 Assignment: Write down characteristic of layer of Earth in tabular form

4
Session – 8

 Objective: i) To understand (facts) about Moon and phases of Moon.

 Need to know: To know reason why there is different size of moon every day and no
moon on some day/s.

 Interest factor: Oreo biscuit activity to understand Phases of Moon.

 Time frame: 2 Sessions

 Teacher’s aid: i) 5th. Grade textbook (Connect with Science – 5) ii) Laptop
iii) Oreo biscuit packet iv) Projector

 Teacher’s interaction: (i) Teacher will first ask students what all information students have
about moon. (Expecting that students have studied some topic related to moon).

(ii) Then teacher will explain various information about moon and some
facts too and write it on board. (If teacher wishes to write).

(iii) Then teacher will explain meaning of phases of moon, about

different phases of moon and then video for the same can be shown for better clarity of concept.

(iv)Then activity oreo biscuit will be conducted. It gone on as below:

a) Teacher will form group of 4 (assuming 28 number of students in class)

b) Instructions for activity is to be listed on board which goes as follows:
i) Draw different phases of moon in rough page and label it.
ii) Carefully open oreo biscuit packet and remove all the biscuits
iii) Separate biscuit in such a way that cream part is visible.
iv) Now students in group will remove cream part from biscuit in such
a way that cream in biscuit represent the visible part of moon
during different phases of moon.
v) Student will paste that biscuits on chart paper and appropriate
labeling should be done.
vi) One member from each group will display their group chart and
will present the same.
vii) Time for presentation will be 3 minutes / group.
