Math 301 Final Exam

Prof. Peter Jones

December 20, 2015

Try to give as much detail as possible in your answers. If you use a theorem,
state clearly which theorem you are using and show that the hypotheses of
that theorem apply.

1. a) Suppose w, z ∈ ℂ . Prove
| |w| - |z| | ≤ |w - z|.

b) For this part of this problem, let (X,d) be a metric space with
metric d(x,y). Suppose {xn} is a sequence of points in X satisfying
d(xn+1, xn) ≤ λ d(x1, x0),
n

where 0 ≤ λ < 1. Prove {xn} is a Cauchy sequence. (You may assume

that if C is any real number and 0 ≤ λ < 1, then C λn → 0 as n → + ∞ .)

c) Solve (and show your reasoning!) limit as x→ 0+ of

3x
(1-cosx)
-1
∫ 1/y dy .
sin(3x)

2. Let X be a metric space with metric d. In this problem you are not allowed
to assume that the metric space X is ℝ . (|x – y | = points off!)

a) Define what it means for a mapping F to be a contraction on X. (Be

sure to have all quantifiers in the correct order!)

b) State the Contraction Mapping Theorem (CMT) for metric spaces.

(Don't forget any of the hypotheses. Also refer to part a! There should
be more than one conclusion in the statement of the CMT. Don't
forget to state that there is an algorithm such that .............)

PART C ON NEXT PAGE!!!

c) Prove the CMT in the form stated in part b. (You may assume that if C
is any real number and 0 ≤ λ < 1, then C λn → 0 as n → + ∞ .)

3. a) Suppose H(x,y) is a continuous function on a compact set K ⊂ ℝ ,

2

Prove directly that H is uniformly continuous. (You must use the

definition of compactness in terms of collections of open sets.)

b) Prove there is a continuous, real valued function F on [0,2]

such that for all x in [0,2]
2
F(x) = (1/9) exp{-2|F(x)|} + (1/26) ∫ (1 + |x-y|) (1 + |F(y)|) dy.
-1

0
(In this problem you may assume part a) is true.)

4. a) Prove or disprove (by a counterexample) the following statement:

There is a real valued function F(x) on ℝ such that F is differentiable
everywhere, but F'(x) is not Riemann integrable on [0,1].

b) ) Prove (by giving an example with proof) or disprove the following

statement:
There is a real valued function F on ℝ such that F is differentiable at
every point and:

i) for every ε > 0 F'(x) is continuous on [ε , 1] ,

1
ii) lim ∫ F'(x) dx does not exist.
ε → 0+ ε
PROBLEM #4 CONTINUES:

c) In this problem you need not prove your answer. Just write a letter
corresponding to the correct answer.

Let

F(z) = ∑ anzn
n= 1

be a power series with radius of convergence = 3 and suppose that for

all n, an ≠ 0. Then

A) It must be that the power series diverges at either z = 3 or z = 3i.

B) Necessarily, limsup (|an+1 /an |) ≤ 1/3.

C) It is possible that limsup (|an+1 /an |) ≤ 1/4.

D) There is a point z such that |z| = 3 and the power series converges at
z.

E) It is possible that there is a power series

G(z) = ∑ bn(z – 3)
n

n= 1
with radius of convergence = 1, such that F(z) = G(z) when
|z| < 3 and |z – 3| < 1.
