The Hermit and His Padi Seeds
Many years ago, there lived a hermit in a forest of Kalimantan. He did not grow food but
depended on the jungle fruit to survive. Soon, there was a drought and all the plants and fruit trees in the
jungle died.
The old man had nothing to eat now, so he turned to be a beggar. He went to a nearby village
trying to get some food. At first, the villagers were happy to help him. However, when he came
continually, they refused to give him food anymore. They told him to grow his own food.
One day, while the hermit was sitting in his hut, sad and hungry, he began to think about growing
his own food. Just then, a boatman stopped by. The boatman took pity on the hermit and gave him some
padi seeds.
Before the boatman went away, he said, ”These seeds will grow and give you everlasting harvests
if you work very hard. If you are tired of the work, the padi plants will turn into weeds.”
The old hermit worked hard to clear the land and sowed the seeds before the rains came.
Strangely, after a short period of time, the padi was ready for harvesting. The old man got a lot of rice
from the harvest. After each harvest, the plants grew back again right away. When the villagers heard
about the hermit and his wonderful padi, they flaked to his padi – field and took home as much padi as
they could.
One day, the hermit became so tired of harvesting the padi that he shouted , “Oh , stop growing,
you wretched thing!” As soon as he said that, the padi plants turned into weeds.

Today, everyone must see a plane flying. Even Some of the people have flown with an airplane.
Have you ever thought why this heavy metal object can be lifted in the air? How can the air plane fly.
An airplane flies because it can generate a force. The force is scientifically called Lift. It normally
moves that heavy airplane upward. So, how does the Lift happen? Well. Lift occurs by the generating of
the forward motion of the airplane through the air. Please note that this motion of the airplane is produced
by what we call the Thrust of the engines.
There are four forces which act on a flying airplane. They are Thrust, Lift , Drag and Weight.
How do these four forces work? When the Thrust which is produced by the engines is greater than the
force of Drag which is produced by the resistance of the air, the airplane will move forward. When the
forward motion is enough to produce a force of Lift which is greater than the force of Weight, the

With the advent of globalization, international marriages have been more popular these days.
However, there are multiple downsides of this trend than marrying native of one’s own country, which
will now be explained.
The strongest argument against such marriage could be language barrier. To illustrate, a Sri A
Lankan man might find it difficult to communicate effectively with his Chinese wife if he has limited l
language skill. If such couple has limited language proficiency, they would have difficulty expressing l
their feelings, instead may end up their conversation with dissatisfaction and misunderstandings.
The other disadvantage of getting married with overseas foreigner could be a cultural shock. It I
is well known that the tradition and customs of different countries vary from one another. As from the t
example above, that Chinese lady is likely to face many difficulties getting used to her Sri Lankan in- e
laws’ lifestyle. This can lead to extreme discomfort and more family issues.
m
Admittedly, some maintain that tying knot with someone from foreign country could be more
s
exciting as it is fun to explore each other’s undiscovered traditions and also it provides opportunities for
8
international travel. However, this could be true for some couples but not always the case. Learning new
etiquettes everyday could be more demanding. Likewise, there are growing issues of dual citizenships and
visa problems.
To summarize, the drawbacks of an international wedding, such as language problem and
difficulty in adjusting to foreign culture and tradition eventually outweigh its benefits. Therefore, I firmly
believe that one should marry a citizen of one’s own nationality if he or she wants to avoid all those/these
difficulties.

The ethical issue about cheating is perhaps as old as education itself. The whole discussing
generally ends with the question of whether cheating or letting others to cheat us during an exam is
ethically wrong. Concerning the latter, there have been two opposing sides of opinion.
Some people say that letting other to cheat is ethically right. They say they need to help one
another. If other people let us copy their works, then there is a good reason to give similar assist to them.
They also argue that if they cannot do a test, that is not any way their fault. In fact, they don’t believe the
test. Tests according to them mean nothing. So cheating doesn’t matter at all.
Meanwhile, those oppose the practice ‘mutual cheating’ regard the habits as unacceptable, and
will do no good to others. They say people will not learn for themselves if we always allow them to cheat
us. Cheating each other’s work will make everyone get similar results and that sort of results will certainly
be misleading. They who do not agree with letting other to cheat believe in helping themselves and argue
others to do their own work.
There is no final answer as to whether letting others to cheat is ethically or socially wrong. In fact,
the practice of cheating is still common, and may have become a custom or habit, and even a serious
problem in many classrooms as in many classes.

A few people have to live near a volcano for various reasons. Actually, living near a
volcano has 48)... and negative sides. Let me tell you about them.
The positive side of living near a volcano is that the soil is 49).... Besides, a lot of volcanic
products can be used in daily life. Sulphur, for example, can be used as an ingredient for matches
or medicine. Meanwhile, the finer volcanic deposits, such as gravel and sand found in rivers, can
be used in building materials. Moreover, the thermal energy from volcanoes can be used to
generate electric power.
Now, let’s discuss the negative side of 50).... near a volcano. An eruption is very
dangerous. When a volcano erupts, lava and other materials destroy habitats and crops. Of course,
this causes great losses and could harm or even kill people living there.
Thus, considering the facts above, we should live far away from a volcano.
