Why is voltage present in an open circuit?
First assume that voltage doubler and cw multlipier is not loaded.

Voltage doubler circuit:

Let at previous negative half cycle, the left capacitor is charged to V(peak value).

Now in positive half cycle the voltage across right capacitor is V+V sin wt

Hence right cap charged to 2V, hence the circuit voltage doubler. How can you reduce the voltage of a component in a
circuit?
But when load is connected the left capacitor loses its charge(some amount), while right cap
is charging. This causes reduction in peak voltage by q/Cleft. Thus we have right cap voltage How does voltage change in a series circuit?
as 2V-q/Cleft instead of 2V.

We have ripple in dc output because right cap discharges through load resistance.

The same analysis we done for vtg doubler is extended for cw multiplier. Assume no load at
starting and later apply load.

Bottom stage charging is same as vtg doubler.

Similarly during positive half cycle again, Cn-1 is charged to 2V

Extend the same analysis, for n stages. We find that:

All cap are charged to 2V except bottom left which is charged to V.

In what way does the voltage drop in parallel circuit?

Why is voltage not zero on an open circuit?

Why is voltage present in an open circuit?

Each charging cycle is represented by distinct colour and charge transfer of q takes place.

For example Cn’ will lose nq and gives it to Cn and Cn gives nq to load.

So ripple on Cn = nq/Cn

Ripple on Cn-1 = (n-1)q/Cn-1

And so on…..

So total ripple is summation(nq/C) = n(n+1)q/C

if each stage cap is equal to C, whether it is left or right.

You can find reduction in voltages too

Reduction in VCn = nq/Cn’(due to redn in Cn’)

Redn in VCn-1 = redn in Cn’ + redn in Cn + redn in Cn-1′

= nq/Cn’ + nq/Cn + (n-1)q/Cn-1′

And so on…..

Put all Cap = C

Add all those terms to get some series and manipulate the series to get the total redn in
voltage.

It's a charge pump.  The diodes steer the charges. During one half cycle the diodes conduct

in one direction, charging up the first capacitor, then on the other half cycle the other
diodes conduct, adding the charge of the first capacitor plus the peak input voltage to the Why is voltage present in an open circuit?
next one.  This continues until the second capacitor is charged twice the voltage, then the
diodes can't conduct anymore and the second capacitor voltage stabilizes at about twice the
input voltage.   You can cascade this arrangement to get any amount voltage multiplication
you want, although it gets inefficient after a dozen or so stages.
