Warm Up Task

The document discusses the importance of warm ups and cool downs for dance practice. It states that warm ups prepare the body for exertion, raise core temperature, increase blood flow, and focus the dancer mentally. A proper warm up should include low-impact isolated movements, cardio exercises, stretches, and strength activities. This prepares the muscles for complex movements, aids contraction and relaxation, reduces soreness, and minimizes injury risk. The document also provides guidelines for assessing student-led warm ups, including preparation, engagement, teaching ability, and organization.

The Importance of Warm Up and Cool Down in

Dance Practice

It is essential to understand the importance of a warm up and cool down to improve your physical
ability, prevent injury, and accelerate the recovery process and aid in reducing fatigue.
During dance practice or any physical activity your body has to work hard to adapt to higher levels
of stress. It is important to warm up your body in preparation for the increased energy demands.
Why is it important to warm up for dance practice?
Warm up is very important as it prepares the body for physical exertion and engages your
cardiovascular system.
Dance warm up aims to:
 Raise the core body temperature
 Increase heart rate and blood flow to essential muscle groups
 Increase mobility around joints
 Focus and prepare the dancer mentally and physically for the dance to follow.
The warm up may include:
 Low impact, small body part movements, isolations and coordination.
 Moving to more vigorous cardiovascular activities and repetition exercises/dance steps
 Preventative stretches for large muscle groups or specific muscles in preparation for skills.
 Strength activities
What are the benefits of a dance warm-up?

 Prepares body for complex movements

 Aids muscle contraction and relaxation
 Can reduce muscle soreness
 Prepares mind and body for dance
 May minimise the risk of injury
