Dance Practice
It is essential to understand the importance of a warm up and cool down to improve your physical
ability, prevent injury, and accelerate the recovery process and aid in reducing fatigue.
During dance practice or any physical activity your body has to work hard to adapt to higher levels
of stress. It is important to warm up your body in preparation for the increased energy demands.
Why is it important to warm up for dance practice?
Warm up is very important as it prepares the body for physical exertion and engages your
cardiovascular system.
Dance warm up aims to:
Raise the core body temperature
Increase heart rate and blood flow to essential muscle groups
Increase mobility around joints
Focus and prepare the dancer mentally and physically for the dance to follow.
The warm up may include:
Low impact, small body part movements, isolations and coordination.
Moving to more vigorous cardiovascular activities and repetition exercises/dance steps
Preventative stretches for large muscle groups or specific muscles in preparation for skills.
