LAB 1: Multisim Laboratory Exercise

1. Launch Multisim – NI Multisim 14.0 (or the version that you have).
2. Name the File – Save As – Your Name Getting Started.

3. From the Component Bar: Do the following:
a. Select Place Source – Power Source – DC Power – OK. Place the battery (V1) on
the circuit board (that is, on the page).
b. Select Place Basic – On the left of the screen Select Resistor – OK.
c. Select Place Indicator - On the left of the screen Select Ammeter – OK.
d. Connect the components by clicking on each and drawing the conductor (will
change to a red line) by moving the cursor – Click to connect to the other
component. You are now drawing Figure 1.
e. Select Place Source – Power Source – Ground – OK.
f. Connect the ground as shown in Figure 1.
g. Click Simulate on the Menu Bar – RUN (Green arrowhead) OR Click the Green
arrowhead on the Component Bar.
h. Click on the Red Block to end the simulation.
i. Check to see if your simulation yielded the same reading on the ammeter (U1), as
shown in Figure 1.

Note: To change component values – click on the label or the value of the component –
Click on label to change that or on Value to change that.

Note: For these particular circuits - U1 (in Figure 1) and U2 are ammeters. U3 and U4 are
voltmeters.

5. In the space below, verify the results obtained in both simulations by written calculations.
a) Calculations of the current for Figure 1. (2 Marks)

b) Calculations of the current and the voltage-drops for Figure 2. (2+2+2=6 Marks)

c) From your observations of both circuits in this laboratory exercise, in the space
below, state how the ammeter and the voltmeter should be connected in an electrical
circuit. (1 + 1 = 2 Marks)

d) Design a circuit in Multisim (Figure 3) with a 3 kΩ and a 9 kΩ resistors connected in

parallel and both connected to a 12V battery.

(3 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 6 + = 15 Marks)

i. Insert ammeters to measure the current supplied by the battery, and the current
flowing through each resistor.
ii. Insert voltmeters to measure the voltages associated with each resistor.
iii. Run the simulation, and print a copy of Figure 3 with the simulation results
for submission.
iv. What is the value of the voltages measured in the simulation? Why does the
simulation show this value? Write your answers in the space below.
