The Warriors Adventure Game Rulebook
INTRODUCTION: Welcome to the Warriors Adventure Game, this is a game based on Erin
Hunter’s Warriors series where the four great cat clans are forced to survive by the Warrior
Code and defend their territory from any threat. As this is the rulebook, you will not hear
much about fluff here, if it is fluff you are looking for, then read my document on fluff as it
explains almost every topic in depth so that you understand the world you are in. Based
on the Warriors official site’s Adventure Game, this game is based on existing concepts
but adapted to work online and with many things happening in different places at once.
This game has been almost half a year in the making, that is to say, I have put hours and
hours into this concept, so I hope to God that it will work out. The game functions
primarily as a typical forum rpg-but then there is a twist: There are players in different
clans, experiencing different things, and yet all of them are related in the grand scheme
of things. As you go through the game, the storylines of each clan eventually come
together to form one big central driving plot. The goal of this is to create an rpg where
you are part of something, and you can actually effect the outcome of the story. If all
does go to plan, then by the end of this there will be the feeling that you wrote your own
spot in the history of the world, and you are now part of it.
PLAYING THE GAME: The game-play is very much the same as your typical forum rpg, if
you are completely new to RPG’s then I suggest looking at the way this one is played for
reference. http://40kforums.com/vb/showthread.php/22161-Godless-UPDATED-AUG-
7th/page5 The nature of the posting should be relatively serious, sillyness is allowed where
it makes sense in the universe, but other than that you should stick to the role playing
pretty close.
OOC: Exactly what it is you are doing right here, so as to make moderating MUCH
MUCH easier for me.
It is however unique in the fact that it has different phases as well. There are three
different types of phases and they all function in different ways.
Mission: When you are in a mission phase, it also means that everyone else (including
players in opposite clans), are on one as well. It is in missions that the plot will be most
relevant to the tasks. Missions work the most identically to a normal rpg, you are given an
objective and must then carry that objective. However, since they are all happening at
once, in order for the next Day phase to start, all clans must finish their mission. Don’t
worry this will not be a drudgingly long action as most missions can be finished relatively
quickly.
Day Phase: Day Phases typically last 48 hours and are basically your free-time within the
game. It is in these phases you may roam around freely, hunting, socializing, or maybe
even investigating something of importance to the clan. If you fail to return to camp in
the 48 hours, you are merely mod placed there and any incomplete actions will be auto-
completed by me.
Gathering: A Gathering is when all four clans meet at Fourtrees to discuss recent events,
it is forbidden by Starclan to shed blood on the night of a Gathering, and so there is no
fighting between the clans at a Gathering. Similar to a mission, a Gathering only ends
when all that needs to be talked about is done.
But just when and how do all of these phases come up? Well it usually will be run off of a
calendar similar to this:
CALENDAR:
Mission
Day Phase
Gathering
:REPEAT
If none of this makes sense to you, do not fret, in game, it will be fairly self explanatory as
to what you should do.
MOVING: The Warriors Adventure game has many areas within each territory, and seeing
as you will be moving around a lot, it is probably a good idea to know how to do it.
Below is the map I will be using for the game:
As you can see, it is done on a hex grid, each territory is represented by a certain number
of hexes, but as long as there is no line dividing them it counts as one hex. i.e. Fourtrees is
one hex even though it is made up of four. This also means that from Fourtrees you may
get to any of its surrounding areas in one move, i.e. The Falls, Sunning Rocks, The Owl
Tree, ect. During the game, all you need to do to move is to say something along the
lines of this below the in character post: OOC: Moving from Owl Tree to Thunderclan
Camp. On the forum, you would then go post that you have arrived in the new area, i.e.
If I posted that I was leaving Owl Tree to Thunderclan Camp, then I’d go into the
Thunderclan Camp section and post as I arrive. Still don’t get it? Just take a look around
the forums and you should begin to see the idea. This is mainly for just normal Day Phases
as most Missions will carry you around the world on their own, i.e. a mission might say: You
start heading towards Fourtrees, moving from the Thunderclan Camp and to the Owl
Tree. OOC: You move from Thunderclan Camp to Owl Tree. At which point you would
move to Owl Tree and then the mission would guide you further. If even now it STILL does
not make sense then all I can say is that it will be a lot clearer in the actual game where I
can easily guide you along through all the areas.
CHARACTERISTICS:
To measure the abilities of your character in Warriors, there are many characteristics.
Often you will be called upon to make tests with these characteristics, so knowing what
each of them do is important.
LIST OF THE CHARACTERISTICS:
Reflex: Your ability to respond quickly to threats and escape otherwise dangerous
situations.
Combat Skill: Your ability to hit your target accurately in combat.
Strength: Your overall strength and hitting power.
Defense: Your ability to block or avoid attacks.
Wounds: How many times you may be wounded before you are taken out.
Intelligence: Your ability to calculate situations in a logical way.
Spirit: Your morale and ability to communicate with Starclan.
After every mission, you may upgrade one such characteristic (besides Wounds) by +1.
Wounds are upgraded by clan rank, i.e. An Apprentice has 2 wounds, and a Warrior has
3.
Most characteristics come into play during the course of the game in the process of tests.
These tests are all different and are done on D10 tables where higher is always better. If
you want detailed info on the game mechanics, send me a PM, because if they were
shown here people might get scared off by the amount of detail. XD
SKILLS:
In the Warriors Adventure Game, you will find that in and out of combat you must
sometimes use certain abilities to your advantage. These are present in the form of Skills.
After every mission, you will be allowed to add a rank to any Skill you want and new
ranks unlock new ways to use that particular skill, i.e. a Rank 1 skill becomes Rank 2 and
so forth. Rank 3 is the maximum Skill rank. Here is a list of all the available skills in the
game.
LIST OF SKILLS:
Bite: A skill to be used against prey, if you hit with a bite you automatically kill the target.
*Unless otherwise stated, you cannot use Bite on other cats. Rank 1: Can use against
small targets. Rank 2: Can use against medium targets. Rank 3: Can use against cats but
instead of instant death it has a 25% chance of causing 2 wounds. If the 25% chance
fails, it is counted as a normal attack.
Fishing: A skill mastered by Riverclan, it allows cats to put their paws in the water and
catch fish. Rank 1: Allows the use of Fishing and allows cats to Listen for fish as prey using
the Listen skill. When a fish is found, you treat it just as prey and may go into combat to
catch it. Rank 2: Can always find fish if they are there. Rank 3: Always catches fish if they
are there.
Flee: A one rank skill that allows you to break from combat. If Flee is used, the other
combatant/s may choose to pursue using a Reflex test, if this is passed, the Flee fails and
the enemy gets a free attack in on you, you will remain in combat. If the enemy either
chooses to do nothing or fails the Reflex test, then you successfully break from combat. A
forced Flee works in the same way. (i.e. Hiss)
Hiss: Use Hiss to scare others away from fights, so as to avoid confrontation and force an
enemy in combat to flee. You must take a Spirit test, if passed then the target must take
a Spirit test and flee if it fails. Rank 1: Can use Hiss. Rank 2: Adds a -1 to Spirit to the target
when enemy is taking the Spirit test. Rank 3: Can choose to instead use Hiss to add a -2 to
the enemy’s defense for the rest of that combat, but does not cause the enemy to flee
in any way.
Listen: Listening can allow a cat to hear nearby prey and hone in on nearby
conversations you are unaware of. Use an Intelligence test, if passed then you may hear
whatever you specify to aim for in the area. i.e. Firepaw wants to listen for prey in the
grass, if passed, he can find the prey’s location and begin a combat with it. Rank 1: Can
listen for prey. Rank 2: Can listen in on conversations in an area one hex over but the
voices are not labeled as you do not know who is speaking! Rank 3: Can listen in on
conversations in an area one hex over and the voices are labeled and actions are
shown, for example, a Thunderclan cat might want to listen in on a conversation over the
border of his territory, it is a very useful skill indeed.
Persuade: Some cats are born with the natural ability to be liked, this skill can be used to
negotiate in non-combat situations. When using Persuade, you must pass a Spirit test, if
passed then you will achieve the dialogue you wanted. What you could be trying to
persuade them to do could be nearly anything, from: “Can I have that bird to eat?”,
“Let’s try not to get involved in a fight.”, “Can I lead the morning patrol of the territory?”
or even to stop another cat’s actions. Of course, the outcome depends upon what your
cat’s reputation is and the current situation. (i.e. A Shadowclan cat who fought
Thunderclan a day ago will not take kindly to a Thunderclan cat asking for peaceful
negotiations, of course there are some exceptions.) When Persuade is being used on a
player, the player does not immediately perform the action requested, they instead can
resist it with a Spirit test of their own, or choose to accept the persuasion. Being
persuasive can also help with getting out of trouble with the Clan Leader and possibly
may be used to lie to people. Rank 1: Allows the use of Persuade on non-player
characters. Rank 2: Gives a higher chance of a successful persuasion. Rank 3: Can be
used on other players.
Pounce: Cats can leap onto their target when it is not prepared for combat. You may
only use Pounce out of combat, if you do, then your first attack automatically hits. Rank
1: Can use Pounce. Rank 2: Can use Pounce to leave current combat and enter another
combat, but only once per battle. Rank 3: Can use a special move instead of a normal
attack on Pounce.
Smell: Smelling scents is among the most important skills of all, it allows you to locate prey
and intruders without a line of sight. It is almost identical to Listening but offers unique
benefits of its own. To use Smell, you must take an Intelligence test, if passed, then you
have successfully picked out the scents of your specified target. Rank 1: Can use smell,
simply point out what you’re smelling for, i.e. Firepaw smells the air for prey. You can also
smell for the identities of cats you have met that are in an area a hex over, i.e. Firepaw
smells the wind current from Owl Tree and picks up the familiar scents of Graypaw and
Sandpaw. Rank 2: Can pick out particular scents, i.e. Firepaw smells for Voles at
Snakerocks. Or even Firepaw smells for Shadowclan cats in Deadtrees. Rank 3: Can smell
up to two hexes away. This means that you can smell for things in different hexes (such as
prey) to cut your journey a lot shorter or maybe even spy on enemy clans.
Swat: A general and very basic attack to use in battle. Counts as a normal attack and for
almost all purposes can be used in combat. Rank 1: Can use Swat. Rank 2: Can have 2
attacks with Swat. Rank 3: Has the option of a clawed swat which adds a -1 to the
enemy’s Defense for the rest of the combat.
Swim: The ability to move safely across water, shared by all Riverclan cats. Rank 1: Can
try to swim by passing an Intelligence test, if failed then the cat has a soggy coat and
receives a -1 Defense for the rest of the mission/day. Rank 2: Can move across water with
no restrictions and can move across Harsh Water but must take the Intelligence test
described in Rank 1. Rank 3: Can move across all water with no limitations.
During the game, you will use these by formatting your posts similar to this:
COMBAT
Firepaw, launched himself toward Dustpaw, slicing wildly with his claws.
OUT OF COMBAT
OOC: Firepaw used Smell to smell for enemy cats in Owl Tree.
Keep in mind that any questions or errors you might make I will answer or correct, so it’s
okay to be a little bit confused, as long as you get the main idea.
OTHER THINGS WORTH NOTING: This game will have a loose morality scale as well, it is not
measured in points or scores, but rather in the things that you do. What you do will have
various reactions in different NPC’s. Meaning that if you don’t want someone upset, you
must not do anything to upset them and guard your reputation when someone accuses
you. In addition, you may learn things that are going on my merely talking to NPC’s so it is
generally a good idea to be social among your clan and among other clans at the
Gatherings. Also, due to its high relevance among the Warriors book series, there will be
some possible romances with some NPC’s. Not saying it’s ABSOLUTELY going to happen
to you, but they will be there if you do so feel inclined to make your character do so. So
basically, this is my attempt at making the world seem far less static and make it feel
more like you are actually there. Also, Medicine Cats have some exceptions to some
rules, this will be explained by me in-game so you don’t have to worry.
CONCLUSION: So, that’s the rules, as brief as I could possibly put it. While 5 pages of rules may
sound a little extreme, it is a whole lot easier for the player than it is for me. If you can follow by
these rules (maybe bookmark the page for easy access) then my job will be a lot easier and the
game will go by at a much better rate. If you don’t understand some parts of it, do not worry, as I
have noted many times in the rules, it is hard for me to explain other than to show you in-game. So
hopefully this document has helped a lot, can’t wait to see you in the world of Warriors!
