FOREIGN LITERATURE
In recent years gaming addiction (computer game addiction, console gaming
addiction, or even excessive play on portable systems) has received increased
attention not only from the media, but also from psychologists, psychiatrists,
mental health organizations, and gamers themselves.

Gaming addiction is not yet classified as a mental health disorder or "true"

addiction like gambling or alcohol addiction. However, some gamers clearly
struggle to keep their playing habits under control and may place more
importance on their gaming accomplishments than their happiness and success
in the real world (e.g., academic achievement, friendships, relationships, career
advancement, health, etc.).

As gaming addiction becomes more of a concern for parents, spouses, families,

educators, and those in the mental health community, it is important for those
who are hoping to learn more about this issue to get their gaming addiction
statistics and facts from reputable sources.

Below, TechAddiction has summarized some of the more notable articles from
the last decade of peer-reviewed published gaming addiction research.

Note that the findings and gaming addiction facts below provide only a brief
overview of the main research findings. Be sure to read the complete articles (or
read TechAddiction's related articles on Computer Game Addiction, Video Game
Addiction Symptoms, & Video Game Addiction Statistics) for a more informed
understanding of gaming addiction statistics, facts, and general information.

LOCAL LITERATURE
There is a current phenomena that is happening today. This concerns our Filipino
Youth and their ADDICTION to MMOPRGs (Masively Multiplayer Online Role
Playing Games). I said addiction because these types of online games are
addicting. When a person plays one of these games, he or she is hooked into a
fantasy world which separates the person from the real world; neglecting school,
real life socialization and interaction with real world. The players in these games
play up to between 10-20 hrs a day.

If you visit internet cafes all over the Philippines, you will notice that most young
people from the age of 8 to 30 are hooked into playing online games. A lot of
these young people do not go to school anymore just to play. And parents do not
have knowledge that this problem has been going on.

FOREIGN AND LOCAL STUDIES

FOREIGN STUDIES
Kids nowadays spend most of their time in front of their computer. Some are
using social networking sites while most of them are seen playing computer
games. This is one major concern in our society today. Kids are addicted to
computer games and they forget their responsibilities like doing their school
works.
When a kid is hooked into a game, it'll be hard to stop him. In the virtual world
that they indulge, they are the protagonist and they can do everything that they
want to do there. This separation from the real world make them neglect what is
really happening. They start to cut classes just to play while some of them forget
real life socialization. They just want to make friends in the virtual world. There
are several effects of video games on our youth. Some people call video games
"natural teachers" because repetitive playing can lead you to having a positive
outlook. Why? Because when you start playing, you repeat several tasks which

then tells your brain that when you strive hard you can be what you want. This is
the reason why gaming companies are starting to make video games that are
value-oriented.
LOCAL STUDIES
In the PhilippinesThese games are not just addictive but also they get money
from the players. Gaming publishers say that the games they publish are "Free
To Play" with no monthly fee, But, there are micro payments. Players are partially
required to buy Items from the Cash Shop, and most game publishers are taking
advantage on this part making huge profit from our poor young people. Parents
worked hard to give their kids allowances, and yet their kids use his / her
allowance for the game.
Playing these games may also be viewed unhealthy. In one occasion, a kid from
New Zealand collapsed for playing 16 hrs straight without eating and much
needed rest. Game companies and publishers usually wash hands when asked
about the issue.

RELEVANCE OF LITERATURE TO THE PRESENT STUDY

So that they will know that it is not just a matter of course, computer use
develops into something compulsive, and usage either online or offline interferes
with daily routines, relationships, activities and one's overall well-being.
Computer addiction may result from or cause compulsive online gambling, an
online shopping problem, web surfing or even obsessive computer programming

If you regularly spend more time on the computer than you intend to, experience
distress because of the computer, or if your computer use interferes with your
obligations then you could be suffering from an addiction to the computer.
Although computer addiction is a relatively new problem, there are effective
treatments that can help people who are addicted to computer understand their
addiction and regain control of their lives.
