Objectives
This course emphasizes the use of analytical and numerical techniques to formulate and solve a variety of applied mathematics
problems frequently encountered in engineering. Specific emphasis is given in linear algebra by presenting methods used to solve
linear systems of equations. Methods applied to solve nonlinear systems of equations are also presented. Furthermore, a concise
presentation of vector differential and integral calculus including fundamental theorems widely used in engineering principles is
provided. The course concludes by presenting important numerical techniques to compute integrals, including interpolatory and Gauss
quadrature. Homework and exams aim at the comparative evaluation of the various schemes discussed in class.

Programming
A major goal of the course is to assist the students develop scientific programming skills. Although the material presented in class will
be suitable for implementation using any programming language, MATLAB will be used.

Grading
Homework 30%
Midterm 35%
Final 35%

Homework and Exams

Homework will be assigned (almost) every week after class. Late homework will not be graded. This is a graduate level course and
students are expected to develop high professional ethics standards. Any indication of plagiarism or copying will automatically result
to a failing grade. One midterm exam will be assigned in-class and during regular class hours on 10/24/12. One final exam will be
given at the same time and location with regular class meetings on 12/12/12.
