Tutorial 1 PG

This document provides an overview of key concepts in strength of materials including: 1) How to sketch Mohr's circles and stress diagrams for different stress states. 2) How to determine normal and shear stresses on an oblique plane given a stress state. 3) How to find principal stresses and planes from a given stress state. 4) Examples of determining principal stresses, maximum shear stress, and normal stress on inclined planes for various stress scenarios.

AM2200: Strength of Materials

TUTORIAL 1

1. Sketch the states of stress and Mohr diagrams corresponding to the following:

(a) (b) (c) (e)

2. For the given state of stress in Figure 2, determine the normal and shearing stresses exerted on the
oblique face of the shaded triangular element shown.

3. At a point in an elastic body subjected to loading, the stress components with respect to a system of
Cartesian coordinates is given by

Determine the normal and shear stress components on an inclined plane whose normal is equally inclined
to the three coordinate axes x, y and z.

4. The state of stress at a point in a machine component is given by

Determine the principal stresses and principal planes. Verify [σ1]=[a][σ][a]T

5. Given the state of stress with respect to x, y, z as

(a) Determine the principal stresses and principal planes. Also, determine the maximum shear
stress.
(b) What is the normal stress on a plane whose normal is given by
n=[ cos 22.50 sin 22.50 0]T?
(c) Find the stress matrix related to axes x’, y’ and z, which is inclined to x, y, z at 22.50?
