INTRODUCTION

Everyday technology is evolving and we are always seeking things to be satisfied to

make our life and work become easier with no hassle. People always relying on much efficient

way of doing things to conserve energy, money, time, and more especially to us who are living in

a generation where “One click way” is like a daily proverb. This gives an inspiration in creating

an online Information System for Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) Researches to flip the

traditional way of keeping records on papers, and for the easier access and tracking of a

particular research document without taking up too much time and effort. And in a 21st century

state university we are always seeking up for better ways to make human works harmoniously.

This gives an inspiration of developing a web based information system for Southern

Luzon State University for list of researches because we all know the significance of searching

desired information from the internet and an overall essence of a research. Internet is one of the

biggest creation that change humanity and how we see the world, from our work, education,

daily living, media, transportation, communication and almost what we need making life more

efficient.

Southern Luzon State University has already made a lot of research and keeping the

manuscripts and documentations including its other information are kept and compiled in a usual

way that it takes effort to access these data. Documentations of researches serve as an

identification of the whole research. And to solve these issue to make the process into a web
based system with the help of database and a whole lot of knowledge on particular programming

languages. This study is executed giving benefits to the university, researchers, students and

other personnel.

Background of the Study

Southern Luzon State University college departments and faculty staffs perform research

that has been recorded at Research Services and College Research Coordinators. Through this

day details like who are the authors of a certain research, funding agency who funded those

institutional research, period of time that research is done and where are the original documents

are stored , are kept manually without a proper organization of a database making it hard to

access. Organizing and sorting out each research by batch and category is done manually and it

would be an ease if adding and searching new research documents are performed in an instant

through internet and automation. The Management Information System (MIS) are the one who

are capable of sorting out those kind of information and they need to keep on track for those data

whenever another researcher or person is needing a particular research document. With the help

of development of a web based information system, this would be accessible anywhere with

internet connection is available.

Researchers will focus on information and data of published college department

researches - those will be encoded in database and will be accessible via web-based information

system. Soon administrator can add, update and gather more research data to the system and

users will be benefited the efficiency of this project.

This research was established to develop an Online Information System of SLSU

Institutional and Externally Funded Researches. These are the objectives to be executed,

respectively:

1. To design an for Southern Luzon State University Researches that is capable of:

 An organized database of published researches

 Features for adding and updating records

 Desired information and process of searching records are classified by its specific

categories like from where college the research came from and what researches

are published on a particular year

 Eliminating the manual process of storing and keeping data and

 Aiming for the efficiency of accessing the information for a certain research

2. To distinguish the programs or softwares to be use for utilize the proposed system

3. Identify the adequacy of the online information system of researches based on:

A. Self-devised checklist type questionnaire for user evaluation in terms of:

1. Graphical User Interface (GUI)

2. Usability

3. Efficiency

4. To find out the measure of acceptability of the proposed system using ISO 251010 based

on:

1. Reliability

2. Functional Suitability

3. Compatibility
 4. Performance Efficiency

5. Maintainability

Significance of the Study

This study will provide wisdom to the Researchers as they will be familiarize and gain

knowledge to the particular programming languages as the system is being developed.

This study will benefit the Management Information System of Southern Luzon State

University- they will have an easy control and access to the information of researches efficiently

and can be use as a new feature for the office.

This study will help the Research Services providing them a better way of organizing the

data efficiently eliminating the traditional way of saving and storing the information of the

researches consuming spaces and many more tasks.

Students and Faculties can access the proposed system when they need particular

information or keep track of those data. A web based system is also significant for the users since

it is time and effort efficient and can be accessible wherever internet is accessible. It can also be

an addition to provide ideas to upcoming studies if they want development for some already

done researches.
Scope and Limitation

This study will cover exclusively limited for Southern Luzon State University gathered

researches. This system deals with the outline and design of web based database system for

keeping basic information of a research like who is the researcher of the study, what department

implemented the study, who provided the fund for the study and how much amount the project

has taken, where the original documents are found, list of researches performed in a particular

year and how long did the research takes to be done.

It also provides a better and much organized process of keeping records, fast searching,

basic functions like updating, adding and deleting information. This has may be only operated by

the administrator – which can by an authorized personnel like the Research Services,

Management Information System (MIS) Office or by Research Coordinators of .

And to that instance that this is a web based system, this is only accessible by the users

through internet. The users must be informed and has a knowledge that these research titles are

already published and should not be illegally copied unless they are formulating for a

development of the study. Users must agree at the web system’s terms and regulation before

proceeding to the homepage.

The aimed respondents for this study would be the Management Information System

(MIS), Research Services, Students and Researchers.

Here are the usual terms and phrases concerning to this topics and their specific meaning

and definitions:

Administrator is the person who is responsible for managing and operating the main

system. The one who is exclusive to perform tasks like adding, formatting, and updating the

database.

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a programming language that is use to conduct the

format and design the interface of a web page.

Compatibility the state of being compatible of a software to a platform or hardware

qualifying to its requirements to fits and work without any conflict.

Database is a system for a computer that collects data and documents in a component

digitally for a certain purpose.

Design of the system is about the interface of the program, following the modern

aesthetic including the proper selection of fonts, background color, and overall appearance.

Effectiveness is the state of which the problems and issues are solved from the actions

taken. Following the objectives that been stated.

Functional Suitability is the term used to distinguish if the overall function is meeting

the specific purpose of the user.

Graphical User Interface (GUI) the design of the system for the users to handle
 Hypertext Mark-up Language (HTML) is a programming language that is use to

develop a web page.

ISO 25010 is the degree to which the system satisfies the stated and implied needs of its

various stakeholders, and thus provides value.

JavaScript is defined as a full-fledged dynamic programming language that,

when applied to an HTML document, can provide dynamic interactivity on websites.

JQuery is free and open source JavaScript library that is used by Web developers to

navigate HTML documents, handle events, perform animations and add Ajax interactions

to Web pages.

Maintainability is the physical characteristic of the design of the system determining the

probability of the system to be restored in case of malfunction, maintenance for the given mean

time.

Management Information System (MIS) is the department/office in Southern Luzon

State University where majority of university related information and records are stored.

Performance Efficiency means achieving the desired output to work time, cost, and

effort productively

Personal Data Sheet is a frame for filling up records, gathering data, inputting

information, keeping documents and files, etc.

PHP also called as Hypertext Preprocessor is an open source, server-side, HTML-

embedded scripting language used to create dynamic Web pages. In an HTML document, PHP

script (similar syntax to that of Perl or C) is enclosed within special PHP tags.
 Portability is the term used to determine whether the system is capable to be transferred

through any platform, other operating systems and hardware for any working condition. It also

determines if the software can be installed by the users easily.

Portable Document Format (PDF) is a file format that is used for the transfer of any

book, recipients, or documentations to the computer.

Reliability is the capability of the source of information to be accurate for the researchers

to formulate.

Research Services is the department in Southern Luzon State University who is

responsible for keeping the data of the researches published for the university.

Software Development Tool pertains to a computer program that the researchers will

use to create the system else to support other programs.

Structured Query Language (SQL) is a standard interactive and programming language

for getting information from and updating a database.

Usability is a quality attribute that assesses how easy user interface is to be used, also

refers to methods for improving ease-of-use during the design process.

Web-based System is an online version of a program to deliver service to the users with

the help of the internet.

XAMPP stands for X meaning “cross” platform, A for Apache HTTP server, M for

MySQL, P for PHP, and P for Perl. It is an open-source web server package that works on

various platforms and was designed to help webpage developers, programmers, and designers
check and review their work using their computers even without connection to the web or

internet.
