HUDYAKA ZANORTE

(Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte - end of May to 1st week of June)

Hudyaka which means revelry in Bisaya is an annual festival that is attended by contingents from the
whole Zamboanga del Norte province. The festival celebrates the founding of the province and the cities
and municipalities of Zamboanga del Norte usually send in contingents to compete. - See more at:

MEGAYON FESTIVAL

(Zamboanga del Sur every September showcasing the arts and crafts of the
Subanens, Muslims and Christians)

The festival is a week-long gathering held in September to celebrate the unity among the three settlers that contribute
to the founding of Zamboanga del Sur: the Subanons (or Subanens), the Muslims, and the local settlers (megayon is
a Subanen word for “unity”). The festival is also held to celebrate the founding of Zamboanga del Sur and, to a lesser
extent, the rich harvest of crops. Because of these reasons, the Megayen Festival is considered as Zamboanga del
Sur’s official festival.
SIBUG-SIBUG Festival

(Zamboanga Sibugay every February)

Sibug – Sibug Festival is celebrated during their foundation day on the province
of Sibugay on February 26, with colorful Ethnic Street dancing with rituals
illustrating good harvest, wedding and healing rituals. During the festival, it
endorses it’s number one product which is the oyster or talaba in tagalong
which has been known to be the biggest, juiciest, and meatiest oysters in the
country.

HERMOSA FESTIVAL or FIESTA PILAR

(Zamboanga City - the city of flowers, every October showcasing flower


parades)

Every October the scenic city of Zamboanga, as the "City of Flowers", celebrates
its grand annual Zamboanga Hermosa Festival or the popularly known as Fiesta Pilar with 12
days and nights of events and celebrations. The beautiful city of Zamboanga welcomes
thousands to the region's biggest, most extravagant celebration of the year. The two day
celebrations are mainly in honor of the miraculous image of Our Lady of the Pilar Nuestra
Señora del Pilar de Zaragosa, which is also commonly known as the “Fiesta Pilar” at the
legendary Fort Pila who has a special fiesta in October. The people of Zamboanga passionately
believe that the lady has served as their unifying cultural and historical symbol.

KAAMULAN FESTIVAL

(Bukidnon every last week of February to 1st week of March highlighting the
historic beginnings of Bukidnon with rodeo and horse shows, tribal
presentations, street dancing and more)

The Kaamulan Festival is a Bukidnon ethnic-cultural festival that takes place


from the last week of February to the first week of March. Kaamulan, from the
Binukid word amul, "to gather" 1, is an indigenous Bukidnon term for a gathering

for any purpose. It can mean a datukship ritual, a wedding ceremony, a


thanksgiving festival during harvest time, a peace pact, or any number of these
together.

Kaamulan started as a festival on May 15, 1974 1 , during the fiesta celebration

of the then municipality of Malaybalay. A town official thought of inviting some


indigenous people to town and made them perform a few dance steps at Plaza

LANZONES FESTIVAL

(Camiguin every October as thanksgiving for a fruitful harvest of lanzones - a


major source of livelihood for the island)

The Lanzones fruit is a major source of the Camiguin Islands' livelihood and it is for
the annual harvest that they celebrate this thanksgiving day. Houses, carriages,
street poles and even people are decorated with lanzones and lanzones leaves.

LUBI-LUBI FESTIVAL
(Lanao del Norte every January to celebrate the tree of life - coconut)

Every year, on November 25, the residents of the peaceful town of Glan in
southern Mindanao come out to dance in the streets in colorful costumes made out
of coconuts. Their version of the mardi gras or lubi-lubi serves as the highlight of
the festivities in honor of the Sta. Catalina de Alexandria. Glan is one of seven
towns of Sarangani which is located on the southern tip of the island of Mindanao.
The town is touted as the tourism capital of the province.
KAGAYHAAN FESTIVAL (Cagayan de Oro City every August 28 showcasing different ethnic and tribal
dances)

Kagayhaan Festival is a local Mardi gras event in Cagayan de Oro is celebrated


on the 28th of August during the feast of the city's patron St. Augustine.

KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL (Davao City every 3rd week of August as


celebration of good harvest - one, if not Mindanao's biggest
festivals)
The Kadayawan Festival is an annual festival in the city of Davao in
the Philippines. Its name derives from the friendly greeting "Madayaw", from
the Dabawenyo word "dayaw", meaning good, valuable, superior or beautiful.
The festival is a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the
wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living.
SHARIF KABUNSUAN FESTIVAL

(Cotabato City every December as a celebration of Islam displaying Muslim


religion and culture) Shariff Kabunsuan Festival it is a colorful festival
celebrating the arrival of Shariff Kabunsuan via Rio Grande de Mindanao more
than 500 years ago to introduce Islam to the natives. The festival, which will
be held from Dec. 15 to 19, will feature SK trade fairs, battle of the bands,

TUNA FESTIVAL

(General Santos City every September showcasing Tuna revolution and the boat
race ending with a full seafood breakfast thanksgiving)One of the more
interesting fiestas in the Philippines is the Tuna Festival in General Santos City.
Most probably, this celebration was inspired by the fact that this particular city
is referred to as the country’s Tuna Capital. The city’s contribution to the
overall revenues of the government deserves to be honored as it operates a
prosperous tuna industry.

BALANGAY FESTIVAL

(Butuan City every May - rediscovering the ancient kingdom of Butuan, proven
by the discovery of nine balangai boats said to be used by Spaniards in the 15th
century)Butuan – Annually, during the festive month of May, Butuan City
celebrates Balangay Festival in time for its fiesta in May 19 to give tribute to its
patron saint, St. Joseph. The main highlight of the celebration is the Search for
the Mutya Hong Butuan on May 18 and this year, 9 candidates will compete
with their beauty, bearing and intelligence.
BONOK-BONOK FESTIVAL

A colorful festival showcasing the Surigaonon’s Tribal Culture through street


dancing. It is a day-long festival marking the Surigao City’s annual fiesta
celebration which is celebrated every September 9. Held in honour of the city’s
patron, San Nicolas de Tolentino, this popular Mardi Gras celebration features
street parties and traditional ethnic dance rituals. The day-long festivities take
place in the area around the Provincial Sports Complex which is a great place to
see the many different dancers perform. This deeply traditional event is a way
of asking the gods for good health and bountiful harvests.

The main feature is the Bonok-Bonok, an ethnic Mamanua Dance performed by


the natives during "Kahimonan" (Fiesta) workshop and wedding ceremonies. A
prelude to the celebration of the Maradjao-Karadjao Festival is the Bulawanong
Barangay. Before the Bonok-Bonok festivity is held, preliminary contest between
the 22 barangays of Surigao City is ongoing to accentuate the month long
festivity that livens up to the household of respective family of Surigao City.
Other activities are street dancing particiapted in by different private and
government contingents using creative costumes, huge floats and hilarious
chanting " Viva Señor San Nicolas! Viva Maradjao-Karadjao".
